Help! Need advice from Hobart N50 rebuilders/restorers...

Hello-First off, thanks to all Hobart N50 rebuilders/restorers who posted their work! I learned a lot from you guys and this is the number #1 source of knowledge and expertise. You guys rock!

Here is my dilemna...I completely disassembled an N50 with the purpose of changing its lubricant. I was able to clean the transmission and planetary. I throroughly check for cracks and worn teeth (gears) or any part that may necessary need it. This N50 looked to be in excellent condition. I assembled everything and noticed that it runs smooth and quiet on the 1st BUT not second and third. There seems to be some "shearing" (not sure if thats the right description" on 2nd and 3rd speed. I played around with the "adjustment screw" underneath the planetary but that didnt do anything. While the gear shifter has some "play", it becomes smooth and quiet when i put slight pressure.

I cant pinpoint if the noise is coming from the transmission or planetary.

Thanks so much in advance for your advice and suggestions...

the lashing sound is on all gears (1st speed is faint but 3rd speed is the loudest). if I put pressure on the speed selector, the noise is gone. the "lashing" sound seems like its coming from the  "fork shifter" (#16 on switch diagram) and the end of the shifter yoke (or specifically the "shifter pin") tapping each other.

This not my video but is a good example of the additional noise.:

Any advice/ suggestion is appreciated

i am having issues like you described. Were you able to find a solution? I opened up the case, removed some grease. Everything appears to look good and don’t see much to adjust that would address this sound. For me, it just started happening after mixing a very stiff dough.

Hello mcgyver- sorry for the late rep. my situation with the n50 was and is maybe a bit different. I tried to open and close the n50 several times and inspected the teeth of all transmission gears and planetary movements but didnt see anything wrong with it. bare in mind, that i purchased this unit used and already observed the noise and thought of changing the grease (which was way over due anyway) which didnt alleviate the issue. a year later, i purchase another and second used n50. I notice that this "noise" was also present. the gear selector of the n50s has a "play" (wiggle room) and if you put pressure, it somehow makes it quieter. upon opening the n50, there is an adjustment screw that controls how much "play" and tried several settings. This does not completely eradicate the noise and i started accepting it that it was no big deal. up to now, both n50 are fine and no other issues.

for your n50 specifically, does this only happen on a specific gear? (like only on 3rd or 2nd for ex?) because if thats the case, this could be specific to a particular transmission?
