How to avoid ripping in challah?

Hello all! I’ve made two wonderful challah loaves so far, and I’m making another one tomorrow but would like to solve one problem, there’s a ton of ripping between my braids.

Im using Joshua Weissman’s recipe and while everything else is amazing, super yummy and fluffy It’d just look a little nicer with the braids in-tact :)

This was my second loaf, nearly identical to my first.

Proof longer, don't braid it too tight, and if it is indeed as large as it seems, it may benefit from being split in two smaller ones or going to a more advanced pattern like flat 4-braid. But first - proof longer.

it worked! unfortunately I had the oven too high so my loaf got a bit burnt, but there was no ripping :)

Yeah, What suave says..

Thats all oven rise. Eliminate this by proving more after shaping being careful not to overprove. Mask it by re-glazing very carefully after full rise.
