Central Milling & KA bulk flours in SoCal?

Can anyone suggest places in southern California (preferably between City of LA north to Ventura) to get big bags of Central Milling or King Arthur flours at retail?

I'm looking to buy a few 50lb bags; I'm not a food service company, so retail is key.

Hi, Cranbo.

The flours Whole Foods sells under their 365 brand are all from Central Milling. They also generally carry KAF flours.

I've asked at my WFM, and they will also order flour in bulk from their local distributors. What they can get for you will depend on what their distributor carries. It's worth asking. The distributor probably also supplies local bakeries, so they would carry 50 lb bags.

Hope this helps. Please let us know.

Thanks David, I'll check with my local Whole Foods about both.

I wonder which one they use for 365 Organic AP? Does it translate exactly to the Organic Artisan Bakers Craft Flour? Or some other blend?

I can't remember which CM flour is packaged as WFM 365 Organic AP. I think Nicky Giusto gave this information to my brother, Glenn.

See the preceding messages. Do you recall the answer?

If I recall correctly, Nicky said the WFM flour is not Artisan Baker's Craft.  I think it's what they call Beehive Unbleached Malted AP Flour.  I don't have the stats on that flour.

I also have reason to believe that CM flours may come to be more easily available to home bakers in the future. I don't know for sure, and  don't know when, but it's being worked on.

david or glenn, just to clarify, ALL of the 365 brand flours at whole foods are giusto? what about bulk bins?

hi cranbo, there are actually a few distributors in LA/socal, at least on a retail level who carry Giusto's. co-opportunity in santa monica will apparently sell you 25 lb bulk bags, you just need to talk to them. i get mine from whole foods. the organic 365 all purpose is AMAZINGLY GOOD for pain ordinaire (baguettes). just wow. found my brand.

as far as king arthur, they only have a few distributors on a wholesale level, and goldberg and solovy in vernon is the best option:

sir lancelot is listed as a brand of flour, but it's KA. they have a few organic professional flours too i think. they have a $100 minimum order, and you probably have to get it from their warehouse.

if you aren't ready to get $100 worth of flour (think $20 a bag, that's 250 lbs of flour! yikes!), just go to target for KA bread and AP, it's like $3.30 a bag! that's really good! if you can ignore target's murky political leanings, end of search. $3.30 for 5 lbs of KA bread is about as good as it gets in retail. albertsons charges $6 for regular AP, and like $3.50 a 2 lb bag for organic. yeah right.

but try the giusto's stuff first. i used to be a KA loyalist, all the way. now that i've reached the end of my search for the perfect flour for french breads, i kinda feel like jumping to team giusto's. thank God i didn't get into bed with KA on a professional level.

thanks for the tips shakesignal. Target is closest for me, but I may follow up with Co-Opportunity in case I can get down to SM area.

I did find a decent deal on Gold Medal unbleached bread flour from my local Smart N Final ($6.49/10lb right now). They also had KA AP for $7.99/10lb.

Whole Foods Organic 365 is most definitely not all Giusto's flour.  CM does sell what they call Beehive in the 365 brand.

I wonder if United Natural Foods could be of any assistance to you, Cranbo.

Costco is selling two bundled 10lb. bags of Central Milling Organic All Purpose Flour (which I've confirmed with CM is their Beehive Organic AP). They only stock it at some locations and mine in Silicon Valley wasn't one of them but I called and asked for it and about three weeks later my local store had a pallet of it in stock. I forget the exact price but think it was around $10 for the 20 lbs. Much much better than any grocery store price for equivalent quality.  I assume any SoCal Costco would also bring in some stock if a customer requested it.
