Free or discounted Kindle bread books.

I intend this post and comments to give Fresh Loafers heads-up when bread-baking Kindle ebooks go on sale at Amazon for either heavily discounted prices or free.  They sell for $.99 to $3.99. 

I'll start off with three books that are always (at least have been for a while) free. Two are public domain.

 As new books go on sale  I will (or you can) add them to the comments.  I mostly get these notifications from a service at bookbub.com.  The sales usually last from 3 days to a couple months, so act quickly.  The "tag" with "frog" in it, is so the webmaster can make a few pennies in commission, like his sidebar links.

All the major bread authors have sales, Robertson, Reinhart, Forkish, etc.

Modern. A very comprehensive baking book with yeasted dough and baking powder. A little bit on sourdough.  Explains the uses of oil, egg, milk in baking.  He kind of uses it as an advertisement for his company, but still informative.  Great for beginners.

Thanks,  I just downloaded one of the free ones.  I have a few kindle bread books, including Vanessa, as you point out the price when on sale is great.  On the other hand, while I have no trouble reading most books on Kindle,  I really miss having a paper bound book when reading bread books .

The Sourdough School, by Vanessa Kimbell, is currently (June 1, 2020) on sale at Amazon, for $6.99 in Kindle format.  Normal Kindle price is much more, though I forget the exact price point, maybe $12.99.   I think this is a good deal for a book of this high quality.  Detailed, informative, lots of good photos.  Focuses on the details of starters as well as the bread formulas.

This is the one that is mostly whole grains and specialty grains. US $3.99 is a great price for an ebook of this quality.  Robertson's method takes a bit more study than, say, Peter Reinhart's teaching methods, but the effort is worth it.  And the photography is superb.  When I read this ebook, I knew I had to get the hard-copy.

I realize cookbooks in ebook format are not as handy as a physical book, for all the flipping back and forth you need to do when cooking.  But if you're not yet sold on buying a hard-copy of this book, this is an inexpensive way to see if you want to add the physical book to your library.

I bought them when they were on sale for US $.99.  Bertinet is a major bread-celebrity/author, so I figured I couldn't go wrong for only 99 cents.   I quickly browsed through both, and found no formulas for anything that was majority whole wheat.  Since I'm primarily interested in at least 50% or more whole wheat, I read no further.

Hence, I can only suggest going by what the Amazon reviews, or Goodreads.com reviews say.

Amazon usually lets you preview a few pages, usually including the table of contents.

This week's super-deals, if you don't already have them, are Kimbell's Sourdough School, for US 99 cents, and Tartine Book No. 3, for US $2.99.  Even if you have the hard-copy edition of those, those prices are cheap for an electronic "backup copy."

Even when I have a hard-copy, if the Kindle edition gets super cheap, I'll buy it for sake of convenience. 

Conversely, if the Kindle edition is super-cheap, I'll buy it out of curiosity, .... and a few times I liked it so much I went on to buy a hard-copy of it also.

For US $1.99 + tax, you can't go wrong!

US $3.99 is a great price for an ebook of this quality.

This is the original, not updated/"New" edition.  The new edition is still full-priced at $16.99 US for the Kindle edition.

This has recipes for mostly white flour bread.  There are some recipes with 18% to 25% whole grain, one 50% whole grain, and at least one 100% whole wheat.

For more recipes with more whole wheat, see their "Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day", both in original and updated/"New" editions.

This book is about mixing up dough for 2 to 4 loaves at a time, and keeping the dough in the fridge for up to 7 to 10 days, and doing a quick final-proof at room temp while the oven pre-heats.  Uses a baking stone; and the steaming method is pouring hot water into a pre-heated roasting pan.

The newer edition has some sourdough, but this book uses instant dry yeast.

This is a no-knead method. Just mix and let time do the work.

The newer edition of this (and the newer edition of the "Healthy Bread in Five...") are worth getting, or upgrading to. So... I would normally suggest skipping the original edition of both books.  However... since this is only $2, and the newer edition is $16.99, I think $2 is worth it to see if you like this method.

Another note, there is a narrow "sweet spot" for hydration using this method, so you will have to adjust the amount of water to correspond to your brand of flour, and your local conditions, whether your flour is dry or has already absorbed some moisture.

Some online reviewers have misunderstood the need for water/hydration adjustments, and bad-mouthed the method.  The authors have addressed this concern in the newer addition, even suggesting the amount of water to adjust for each popular brand of flour.

There are knock-off books of the "Five Minutes a Day" method.  This is (as far as I know) the original.

Get this book!  This is the one with majority (>50%) whole wheat recipes, compared to the mostly white flour recipes of their "Artisan Bread in Five...".

This is an unbeatable price for a book that is so famous.  Lahey was/is one of the main popularizers of the no-knead-bake-in-a-dutch-oven method.

Chap 2: Basic method.

Chap 3: Variations. Including whole wheat, rye, baguette, ciabatta, 

Chap 4: Pizza and focaccia.

I have just purchased this at the Kindle sale price.  I'm a cheap-skate, so I would not have paid full price for the Kindle or the hardcopy.  But at $3.99 for the Kindle, I think it was a great deal.   One pizza crust dough formula, and many varistions on toppings, plus many Italian recipes besides pizza.

I have the hard-cover edition.

There are only two (similar) dough formulas in the book, but the main draws of the book are the inventive sauces and toppings.  Very gourmet and artisan.  

There is a chapter on toasts, soups, and salads; and a chapter on desserts. 

If you want to take your pizza beyond the normal chain-style red sauce and toppings (pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, olives) then this would be a good resource.

I have skimmed through it.  This is a good cookbook for new home-millers and for those wishing to bake with partial and 100% whole wheat.  

Has explanations for the beginner as to hard/soft wheat, winter/spring wheat, and types of flours.

Most formulas are partial, not 100%, whole wheat. Formulas are volumetric (US cups) not in grams.  No sourdough, just commercial yeast.

Has desserts, pancakes, waffles, pie crusts, cookies, scones, muffins, crackers, quick breads, yeasted bread, pizza crust.  Whole-wheat pastry flour is used in a lot of formulas.

This is a professionally done book, intended for a North American audience.  Photos are actual finished product, not stock photos.

It's free, so it's worth a look.  Especially for beginning bakers, or bakers new to whole-wheat baking.

I just purchased it.  Of particular inferest to me:  It has 4 whole wheat formulas, 1 whole Kamut formula, 1 whole spelt formula, and 1 whole rye formula.

It has a really good looking gluten-free seeds and oatmeal loaf. 

I like the pizza method: start in a cast iron pan on the stove top and finish under the oven's broiler element.

Blurb says it's for beginners.
