Free or discounted Kindle bread books.

I intend this post and comments to give Fresh Loafers heads-up when bread-baking Kindle ebooks go on sale at Amazon for either heavily discounted prices or free.  They sell for $.99 to $3.99.

I'll start off with three books that are always (at least have been for a while) free. Two are public domain.

As new books go on sale  I will (or you can) add them to the comments.  I mostly get these notifications from a service at bookbub.com.  The sales usually last 3 to 5 days, so act quickly.  The "tag" with "frog" in it, is so the webmaster can make a few pennies in commission, like his sidebar links.

All the major bread authors have sales, Robertson, Reinhart, Forkish, etc.

For a longer list of what I've already picked up, and how much I paid, and a very very short review, see my post at: http://www.thefreshloaf.com/node/61370/my-breadpizza-library-kindle-and-hard-copy

Free: The New Dr. Price Cookbook, Kindle Edition, by New York Royal Baking Powder Company.

https://www.amazon.com/New-Dr-Price-Cookbook-ebook/dp/B00849LL7A?tag=froglallabout-20

Public domain. The bread and rolls in this book are all leavened with baking powder. No yeast, no sourdough. Dated. Almost all volumetric measurements. Inexact oven temps, such as "medium oven" or "hot oven."

Free: Woman's Institute Library of Cookery Volume 1: Essentials of Cookery; Cereals; Bread; Hot Breads, Kindle Edition, by Woman's Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences.

https://www.amazon.com/Womans-Institute-Library-Cookery-Essentials-ebook/dp/B00847SA6C?tag=froglallabout-20

Also dated, but interesting. Hey, it's free.

Free: How to Bake: The Art and Science of Baking, Kindle Edition, by Dennis Weaver.

https://www.amazon.com/How-Bake-Art-Science-Baking-ebook/dp/B0086W53ZQ?tag=froglallabout-20

Modern. A very comprehensive baking book with yeasted dough and baking powder. A little bit on sourdough.  Explains the uses of oil, egg, milk in baking.  He kind of uses it as an advertisement for his company, but still informative.  Great for beginners.

Thanks,  I just downloaded one of the free ones.  I have a few kindle bread books, including Vanessa, as you point out the price when on sale is great.  On the other hand, while I have no trouble reading most books on Kindle,  I really miss having a paper bound book when reading bread books .

The Sourdough School, by Vanessa Kimbell, is currently (Nov 1, 2019) on sale at Amazon, for $7.99 in Kindle format.  Normal Kindle price is much more, though I forget the exact price point, maybe $12.99.   I think this is a good deal for a book of this high quality.  Detailed, informative, lots of good photos.  Focuses on the details of starters as well as the bread formulas.

Sale over, Dec 3,  2019.

As of Dec 1, 2019, Chad Robertson's "Tartine Book No. 3: Modern, Ancient, Classic, Whole" in Kindle format, is on sale for $3.99 US.  https://www.amzn.com/B00F8H0FKU?tag=froglallabout-20

This is the one that is mostly whole grains and specialty grains. US $3.99 is a great price for an ebook of this quality.  Robertson's method takes a bit more study than, say, Peter Reinhart's teaching methods, but the effort is worth it.  And the photography is superb.  When I read this ebook, I knew I had to get the hard-copy.

I realize cookbooks in ebook format are not as handy as a physical book, for all the flipping back and forth you need to do when cooking.  But if you're not yet sold on buying a hard-copy of this book, this is an inexpensive way to see if you want to add the physical book to your library.

Sale over, Dec 3, 2019.

Reinhart's "Whole Grain Breads," in Kindle format, is also currently on sale for US $5.99. https://www.amzn.com/B004IK8PFU?tag=froglallabout-20  If you don't have it, I also recommend this.  This is also a must-have for the whole-grain baker, in my opinion.

I bought them when they were on sale for US $.99.  Bertinet is a major bread-celebrity/author, so I figured I couldn't go wrong for only 99 cents.   I quickly browsed through both, and found no formulas for anything that was majority whole wheat.  Since I'm primarily interested in at least 50% or more whole wheat, I read no further.

Hence, I can only suggest going by what the Amazon reviews, or Goodreads.com reviews say.

Amazon usually lets you preview a few pages, usually including the table of contents.

This week's super-deals, if you don't already have them, are Kimbell's Sourdough School, for US 99 cents, and Tartine Book No. 3, for US $2.99.  Even if you have the hard-copy edition of those, those prices are cheap for an electronic "backup copy."

Even when I have a hard-copy, if the Kindle edition gets super cheap, I'll buy it for sake of convenience.

Conversely, if the Kindle edition is super-cheap, I'll buy it out of curiosity, .... and a few times I liked it so much I went on to buy a hard-copy of it also.

I made a page of links to the Kindle listings of the major bread authors here: http://www.thefreshloaf.com/node/61698/my-favorite-bread-pizza-authors  and I regularly check it.  If you have any suggestions of authors to add, I'll consider adding them.   Amazon's prices for ebooks bounce all over.  You usually catch a deal when the book first comes out, then once a quarter, and a "super deal" just once or twice a year.

The Pizza Bible, ebook, by Tony Gemignani, is on sale for only $6.99.   As of Jan 8, 2020.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JYWW490?tag=froglallabout-20

He's been the world champion pizza maker for like 11 years.  This is my favorite pizza book.  It covers all or most all styles of pizza.  Has formulas for both yeast and sourdough, including long proof in fridge.

Thanks for the tip, Dave. I scooped up Josey’s book. I’ve heard good things about. I am beginning to like Kindle versions because they eliminate storage.
