Greetings from New England

Hello from the North Shore of Boston. The is the perfect outlet for my latest obsession -- bread making. Accepting that I nerd out over certain activities and interests is one of the dividends of getting older. Bread-making has been a simmering interest for years. Now it's a full-blown nerd-out. Though I've always liked to bake, this most recent flare up started with HBin5. Quickly moved on to sourdough. Love this site.

giving your inner nerd free reign here instead of home may be also beneficial for your relationship. No more eyes of friends or loved ones glazing over when you enthuse about nuances in crumb and crust, or hold forth about the discreet charm of bourgeoise baking...

Greetings from Maine (originally Hamburg)

My wife gets a kick when I take pics of bread. Thanks for the reply!

Baking is the perfect nerd-out persuit. Vast amounts of technical informtaion and math! Isn't it fun?

When I started baking a year ago, I didn't realize how nerdy it would end up being, but I have embraced it and really enjoy scaling recipes, fiddling with bakers percentages, and all the timing with cultured starters.

Check out 'bread' by hamelman if you haven't yet. I just got a copy and it is nerdtastic!

Hamelman's book is on my list. Turns out one of my favorite co-workers is an alumni of Hamelman's bakery in VT., having worked there as a teenager. She's still friends with him.

My wife gets a chuckle out of me taking pics of bread, especially the "crumb shots." Can't blame her.  Luckily she has her own nerdy pursuits as well.

Cheers,

Jim
