We 3-1 gmas are Fruity and Sour!!

Hi all, haven't been here in a while... we have been baking as needed... but this is the time of year to remember our trip to bake with our sister Barbra, who is no longer with us for the baking... 2 years ago to surprise her on her Oct. 31st birthday Helen and I showed up at her house to make our yearly fruitcakes...and celebrate her 75th birthday. We baked together this week using her recipe for Fruitcake and making the sourdough bread she taught us to love... (uh, require really)... Here is our dedicated baking results.

Helen's first because she is the baby of the family...

Rich dark fruitcake and golden baked bread... it was a good day in Helen's kitchen.

Mine below:

That is pounds.... that heavy full of fruit cake... boldly baked sourdough...

We had a good day baking together... actually live about an hour apart and will probably actually bake together in person some times... this was good and great to revisit our visit with Barby....

Happy Holiday Baking y'all from the Texas gmas

I guess to be properly seasoned and aged with brandy, whisky or bourbon - or all 3 - it is almost too late!  Those barb inspired SD loaves, even that blindingly shiny one, are very nice but maybe not as nice as the fruit cake.  Well done and happy baking ladies

Wow! I don't believe I ever saw a fruitcake that I thought I could eat ~ until those pictures!

Inspiring for sure, thank you!

I've always liked fruitcake sandwiches - fruitcake sliced thin with whipping cream and cream cheese frosting schmeered in between. Negative remarks on "gifted fruitcakes" has always bothered me for some reason. I can only guess they've never had the real thing - only store bought.

Glad to see you guys are back at it again.

Cheers and Happy Holidays to you both,

Wild-Yeast

People laugh at me when i spread marmalade and then whipped cream on thin horizontal round slices of panettone and then stack them up into a layer cake :-)  Whipped cream and cream cheese frosting in between thin slices of fruit cake sounds completely normal and delicious to me:-)

Home made fruit cake is like most things made at home from scratch -  so much better and so different than store bought.  Around here, when we gift a fruit cake, it is a real gift.that deserves whipped cream and cream cheese frosting between layers from now on:-)

I have had this year's fruit snockering in brandy and bourbon in the fridge for a year.   My wife has tried to throw them out several times.:-(  Can't wait to use that fruit aged, hooch to properly age this year's cake parts!

Thanks for the positive comments.... making Fruitcakes this time of year gives us time to snocker then a few times before the holidays... I also make an identical batch and make mini tin loaves for gifting... the snockered one is for at home with warnings given ahead of dishing it up... Those cream cheese frosting ideas will have to become tradition for sure... I like it with whipped cream already, so I am sure it will just get so much better.  I pulled out two Chrstmas recipe books... A hot cuppa and a relaxing planning session are on my list to "to dos" today... Happy Baking, Diane
