Sourdough discard ——> active starter?

It appears my sourdough starter that I had been storing in the fridge and feeding weekly has gone missing. Not sure if someone in my family accidentally threw It out .... ? but what I do have left is my container of discard.

can I use some of the discard to create new starter!? Or do I have to start all over again from the beginning ??

thank you for your help!

Add a small amount to a lot of flour/water - like 10 to 1 ratio - and leave it for a few days, it'll come back. Enjoy!

I had my starter go bad on vacation despite converting it to a stiff starter and giving it a good feed before going away for 3 weeks.  I revived my starter from discard, I just took a small amount of it, not including the hooch, and fed it 1:2:2 until peak repeatedly until it was able to rise to 2-3x in 4-6 hours at 80ºF.  I’ve been using that starter even since then without any problems.

Once you have your starter going well, you’ll want to dry some of it and then freeze it in case this happens again.

the starter.  A few curses to those who dare touch it and plenty of warnings to leave it alone.  Lots of red stickers and... well you get the idea.  Gotta train family members.

Yes, your discard will work.. just remove some and feed it.   :)  good luck
