I went on a whim googling for artisan bread classes seeing as there doesnt seem to be anything like KA here, that I have discovered yet.
My first stop...and this is WHERE I stopped because it just blew me out of the water!
The Artisan Bread School. *cries*
I found this course http://www.artisan-bread-school.com/location.htm
I want so bad to do it, but the money and time away from home is just too much to ask for.
bugger!
Judges bakery
Well it looks like you might be getting a glimpse of it. The baker at Judge's is one of the instructors in Tuscany. I just checked it out.
Me Too, I wanna go to Tuscany.
TGB,
Great find. The classes look terrific. I would love to do the 5 day class. Let's see, with 1.5 dollars per Euro... Hmmm, guess that's not in the cards for me in the forseeable future. But it's definitely the stuff dreams are made of.
lol I know! :( How
lol I know! :(
How awesomme!
I'd put the money to it if I were opening a bakey....buuut, I'm not, so I will pine in silence ;)
Me, too, wish I could
If I just happened to be going to Tuscany anyway - as if!

Artisan Bread School
There's a rumour that Carl Shavitz of ABS might be doing a class in the USA. More to follow.
Breadline, Thanks for the
Breadline,
Thanks for the "rumour" info. Please keep us posted if you find out where and when Shavitz will be conducting a class (or classes).

The rumour
It's worth keeping an eye on the appropriate Artisan Bread School website page for information about class(es) in the USA
http://www.artisan-bread-school.com/othercourses.htm
If I hear anything more I'll post the information for you.
Thanks. I just copied the
Thanks. I just copied the Artisan Bread School link into my "Favorites" file and will check it periodically for classes in the U.S.. I would really like to attend some classes. It's good to see, up close and personal, the techinques used by professionals instructors. Over the years I have taken cooking lessions and attended demos on cooking conducted by professional chefs and find that I always come away with some technique that I either didn't know or one that corrects something that I was doing incorrectly. Baking cookbooks are great and there are some really execellent books out there now, a number of which I have purchased and use regularly. But there's no substitute for actually seeing how it's done. That's what I really like about taking classes and watching baking videos. I also purchased a couple of King Arthur videos on artisan baking which have been extremely helpful. Anyway, thanks again for your posting.

Rumour
sure bet Shavitz (or Peter Rinehart or any one else of that caliber) will be in Bakersfield, CA, bah humbug...heck, I wouldn't be if I didn't have to be!
Update
Just to let you know that the idea of Shavitz giving a class(es) in the USA is still being discussed. Progress has been very slow.
Thanks for the update
Breadline,
Thanks for your posting, appreciate the update.

artisan bread school
The weather in Italy during May was absolutely horrible. Sitting in an internet cafe keeping out of the rain and looking for something to do I came across The Fresh Loaf website and Artisan Bread School. Amazingly I was only 25 miles away from Mercatale. I phoned Mr Shavitz and, although it was between courses, he offered to give me a 1-day tutorial. An absolutely fantastic, if exhausting experience. The breads were delicious and to describe them as artisan would be an understatement, they are a labour of love. Shavitz is passionate about bread and is an inspiring teacher. If you have the opportunity of going to Artisan Bread School, take it. www.artisan-bread-school.com

Classes in the USA
I spoke to Carl Shavitz over the weekend and he confirms that he is very close to concluding arrangements for classes on the East Coast 20, 22 and 24 October 2008. He wouldn't give further details but did say he'd let me know when everything is finalised. Watch this space and the ABS website.

Thanks
Looking forward to finding out where the classes will be taught.

2010 bread-making courses
For those of you who have been following this, Carl Shavitz will be giving classes in the USA again. One- and 2-day classes for Miele in New York City, Princeton NJ and Boca Raton FL. There's also a 5-day course in Washington state in which you'll be baking the breads in a wood-fired oven:

And, it looks like Artisan Bread School has moved its home in Italy, and what a move it is. Have a look at the following:

I thought I'd wait to sign up
I thought I'd wait to sign up to Carl Shavitz's class in Princeton but that was a big mistake. It's now FULL. Why did I hesitate? HELP! Well, if you've just discovered Shavitz & Artisan Bread School don't do the same thing. Book NOW
That link doesn't work.
But if you strip the location.htm off, it does.
Jeremy
I don't actually know what
I don't actually know what strip the location.htm off means, but i just checked and it does work. Clue me in.
http://www.artisan-bread-school.com/Fattoriadegliusignoli.htm
It's pure geekery
The link in Thegreenbaker's original post that started this thread is http://www.artisan-bread-school.com/location.htm but if you click on that link the page cannot be found.
If, however, you strip off the location.htm and go to http://www.artisan-bread-school.com/ then it does work, and you get to the Artisan Bread School's home page.
No biggie.

Artisan Bread School in NYC
Artisan Bread School founder, Carl Shavitz, just finished teaching a series of classes in the US.
Check out a blog from the NYC class, http://gracenotesnyc.com/2010/04/01/artisan-bread-school/
Artisan Bread School Princeton
I took the class (wife's b'day gift for me, or herself not sure?) in March 2009. It was a great class. It broke me away from using my bread machine to doing everything by hand. I've never looked back. Carl is a very engaging teacher and he truly loves his "work". Very good class. I highly recommend it.
Price reduced for Italian 5-day course
Wow! Eureka! I see that the cost of Artisan Bread School courses in Italy have been reduced by 25%. This seems too good to be true. Check it out at http://www.artisan-bread-school.com/fees.htm
