ovencrafters plans

Greetings to all,

i have been reading the bread builders book for a couple of years and i recently decided to try building an oven.

i tried contacting ovencrafters but they are not online anymore, does anyone have any information where i can buy

plans from or if anyone has plans from ovencrafters specifically the 3foot x 4foot oven or the closest to it.

thanks

Mike Atsalakis

I don't remember that this book has explicit plans, but you'll find the information on materials and oven design current and very pertinent.  Insulate to the best of your finances.

Go to the Forno Bravo store (http://www.fornobravo.com/store/) and search for "pompei." There are a few resources that include a downloadable PDF and DVD. Their forums are also filled with tips and techniques regarding building a brick oven.

I just replied to your other post.  I do have the set of plans for that oven I think in the book I have.  I don't remember them being online.  I thought I had to mail in for them or something.

janij,

Are they detailed from start to finish with a material list?

Do they require refractory concrete or is portland good enough?

any details about the plans would be very helpful because i would potentially

love to purchase them from you.

I have also been recently dissapointed to find out that the ovencrafters plans are no longer available.  Would it be possible to get a copy of your plans as well?  I'd happy cover the cost of reproducing and sending.  Thanks so much

Would you please send me the file to the plans? I've got my books lined up and am ready to undertake the project. Thank you Love.

If (a) you are and (b) you are not ! this little bread-making soul would love a link to that DropBox location for the 36 x 48 oven : ) Thanking you in advance and trust your oven is still going strong.

Yes, it has info on site selection all the way to pictures of them being built.  It has 3 size options and material lists for each.  It's 34 pages long.

As far as the concrete goes.  You will have to find fine clay powder to mix per the instructions with the portland for the oven mortar.  We couldn't find said clay so we went to Acme brick and bought this fire rock mortar that is made for chimney work.

I can't sell the plans since we still need them.  However, if you PM me your address I can mail you a copy.

I want to build a bread oven just like the bread builders but i would like it a little bigger about 3 feet by 4 feet or the closest to it.

last year i saw the ovencrafters plans online but when i decided to get them ovencrafters was off line.

Thats really exiting that you are building an oven with your wife,my wife and i also are trying to get it together

to build one this summer.

I would love to get my hands on those oven plans whenever you are done with them or whenever you can send them.

Thank you so much to replying to my post and giving me hope.

my address is ( RR 1 Site 8 Comp.4 Winlaw BC V0G-2J0  Canada) 250 355 2880

i also have a calling card and i could possibly call you and get some more details if need be.

Thanks again and i am very grateful for your help

Hi,

I stumbled across thisthreads in searching for oven plans from ovencrafters.  Much like the other person you were talking with I got ready (finally) to purchase plans, and they have shut down their website.  I was wondering, if you are finished with your plans, if I might purchase them from you.  And if you all weren't finished with your plans if I might pay you to make a copy of the plans and mail them to me? I live in AR and would cover postage etc.

Thanks for considering!

Christian

janij's picture
janij

Christian, I have no problems making a copy of the plans and mailing them to you.  I don't feel right about taking payment for them.  I think it cost me like $2 to mail them to Canada for the other guy so no big deal.  Just PM me your address and I can get it in the mail today or tomorrow.

Can I also recommend you buy 2 books.  Between the these two books and the plans we built our oven.  The first is The Bread Builders by Daniel Wing.  The second is From the Wood Fire Oven by Richard Miscovich.  The From the Wood Fire Oven book I found when we were partly done with building ours.  I wish I had gotten it earlier.  There are some pictures in it that had we know we could do it like that!!  Kind of thing.  Plus it talks about materials you can use that weren't available when Alan Scott wrote his plans.  So let me know!

No problem at all!  We love our oven and had a fun time building it.  It is sad they quit selling the plans and I have no problem passing them on.  Will copy them now and take them to the post office today!

Jani

edit- get the fire blanket as recommended in the From the Wood Fire Oven book for the final insulation layer.  WELL WORTH IT!!  Also we used thermocouples this time.  Field Piece makes some really good ones.

Hi Jani,

I only joined the forum yesterday and boy have i seen some great ideas and recipes posted freely for us amateurs to use. You must be one of TFL's angels, making those oven plans freely available. I have a copy of The Bread Builder which includes lists and quantities of bricks etc., but their ovens all seem a bit big for my purposes. I only want to bake three or four loaves at a time. Do your plans cater for a smaller oven?

Drop box

Hello, I have been dreaming of an Alan Scott oven for a very long time. My grandparents had one and I have many memories centered around the oven. Now that I have a house of my own and am ready to get started on my own oven, I am sad to see the plans are no longer available. My grandfather swears he has a set of hand drawn plans from Alan Scott somewhere, but he has yet found them. Is it possible to get the information for the drop box, it would help so much? Thanks also for the book suggestions they are getting us very excited to get started.

One of the options in the book is 36x48.  I am copying the book right now.  it is just a spiral bound deal.  I will take it to the post office this afternoon when I go to get my kids.  I will let you know when the post office lady thinks you should get it!

My husband and I started last fall but it has rained almost non stop here in Texas this winter and spring, so progress has been slow.  We had one built when we lived in Houston.  There is a thread about it here

http://www.thefreshloaf.com/node/11410/project-begins

When I did the one in Houston there was a man Climbhi on here who had built one as well.  He did a write up about his here

http://www.thefreshloaf.com/node/10694/building-small-scottstyle-brick-oven

And his photo log is still up on flickr here

https://www.flickr.com/photos/climbhipa/sets/72157613634415857/

Between all this Kyle and I have limped through this one ourselves and it has not been bad.  If I get some time this weekend I will do a write up about it and post some pictures of how it has progressed.  But between the book The Bread Builders, the plan book and those links we are getting along.  Let me know where this takes you and if I can do anything else to help!

Thank you so much for going out of your way and doing this! i am super exited!!

We had our first oven built for us.  We had little kids and a starting business at the time.  We have since moved to the country and bought our forever farm and are taking the plunge but this time on our own.

I am excited for you!  I put the plans in the mail this afternoon but am worried I shipped them on the pony express.  After I paid I asked if there was any tracking info and the lady said no and that it would take 2-3 weeks to get to you.  I was like EEK!  So I will copy it again and go back and see if there is a faster way cause that is crazy!

mihalaras's picture

That sounds like us we just moved to the country as well but we built a tiny home on my mother in law's property.

we also have small kids and we are gonna take the plunge too hahahahahahha.

we are going on a road trip to the city to visit my mom, friends and a little shopping for a couple of weeks

so dont worry about sending them again they will be here when we get back.

i dont know how to thank you i mean besides paying you of course

what do i owe you?

mihalaras

janij's picture

Well enjoy your trip and hopefully they will be there when you return.  The postage was only $5 so don't worry about it at all.  I am glad that I was able to help you out on your journey to a wood fire oven.  I am so excited about ours.  It has been a rewarding project even though it has taken many hours of standing around going how do we do this!  There are so many possibilities for the facade that it gets pretty crazy.  We have spent a lot of time rearranging bricks!

it's always beautiful to see the fraternity among strangers around wood fired ovens, baking ,and voluntarily helping each other!... That's why I love this site... Well done Janij!... That said I must share with you that I'm still waiting for a outdoor temperature meter (345 US$!) bought december of last year from Ovencrafters and nothing... No response for my e-mails, no way to reach them on phone, and now their site is out of air... I did receive some thermocouples and plan 2, but I would't recomend the last to anyone, specially someone like me, whose english is not the first language...Obscure presentation, bad photos, no convertion for kilograms!... Feels like a work of a high school student. And i thought they were the reference for building a wfo... If anyone is looking for good advices and do-it-yourself expertise, try Rado Hand from Traditional Oven, great guy, good site (confuse but complete!) and many generous tips from someone who loves his trade. Good building and happy baking!... from a fellow baker from Brasil.

Help! For years I dreamed of a masonry bread oven and it was just that--a dream. Now, due to an unexpected turn of events I can make it a reality. And I discover that the Alan Scott plans are no longer for sale. I do have The Bread Builders book and Chapter Nine includes an overview of a 32 x 36 brick oven. That's probably about the size I need. My mason would appreciate a complete set of plans. Can anyone out there help?

MarkMinor's picture
MarkMinor

I'm new to this site--I've built the Ovencrafters "Artisan" oven, and now have an opportunity to put my "skills"  (ha ha) to use in a bigger venue.  I wanted to investigate constructing a second Scott oven, a larger size---and come up with crickets when I try to contact them.  Perusing the interwebs it would seem they have been "disappeared".  Is that the consensus here?

If so, I would have no problem asking if anyone on this forum has experience/plans in building one of the larger models (larger than the Artisan), and if so, would be willing to share their knowledge, and dare I say, plans?  I have no problem going after them "legitimately", but if the company is no longer, then I'd take whatever means are available.  Help!

arkbirdlady's picture
arkbirdlady

I don't like to violate anyone's patents/copyrights, but the overview is in Chapters 7, 8, 9 of the Alan Scott book and obviously he intended his experiences to be shared. My mason is intelligent and experienced and he can probably work it out from The Bread Builders Book alone, but plans would be helpful. Also need to know where to go for all the related tools and supplies, such as peel, long handled poker, brass bristle brush, et cetera. Obviously with determination they can all be built from scratch, but, Lordy, we do enough things from scratch out of nothing around here! I'm speaking as an Arkansas homesteader who went 7 years without a real kitchen sink and working bathroom so I've walked the walk. But we are getting up in years and cannot just keep doing everything the hard way.

MarkMinor's picture
MarkMinor

What I have are plans for the "Artisan", which is quite a bit larger than the one you're talking about.  There is material in the plan "book" (using the term very, very loosely) that is not quite so specific to the exact oven in the Bread Builders book, but, I think, a little more "generic" to the Scott ovens in general.  If you think it would be of help, you can email me at stonehousebreadworks (at) gmail  and I can see about getting you some help.

janij's picture

Arkbirdlady,

I am so sorry I never saw that you were looking for the plans as well.  Do you still need them?

Its a bit late in the day perhaps to add to this thread for 2015, but my brother in law built a brick bread oven from Tom Jaine's book, and it works a treat. You would have to adapt the materials to N American specifications, but that shouldn't be too difficult to sort out.  And after the bread has come out of the oven then put in the pork roast and the potatoes etc!  Or even a turkey!

Hello,

I'm letting a lot of the members here know about our company, so you may take a look at your convenience as to our wood fired brick ovens. I noticed you had interest in building your own wood fired brick oven, and it's always a fun project to take on! Our small business offers diy kits to make the building process easier with several floor options to choose from.

If you'd like to see what we have, and learn about us a bit more you may find something that is in line with your needs.  We have kits, or just oven building materials for your build. Below is a link if you have a chance to check it out!

Jani, may I have the link to the ovencrafter plans? A group of folks here in Chattanooga are interested in wood fired ovens so we are organizing a builder's co-op to facilitate the learning and building process. There is also a baker's co-op in the works to get the most out of the first group's efforts!

Thanks, Don

If you'd like to see what we have, and learn about us a bit more you may find something that is in line with your needs.  We have kits, or just oven building materials for your build. Below is a link if you have a chance to check it out!

I have been searching for the Alan Scott OvenCrafters plans. I want the 32 x 36 or maybe even a smaller size.  Has anyone here built a smaller size?  In The Bread Builders there is information about building a 32 x 36.  I've seen people are building this one and many talk about building a bigger one.  Is a smaller size available? Is smaller size practical? I would love some feedback from anyone who has experience or knowledge on this.

Thank you

I am also hoping to find a copy of the plans. I would also be willing to set up a place to host them and respond to requests for them. If anyone has received a copy of them and wouldn't mind passing them on, I would appreciate it.

If there are objections from the people who run ovencrafters I would stop, but I would hate to see these plans disappear or become inaccessible.

Any one actually received anything???

I have not received any responses from the seemingly "grateful" folks who have posted in the last few months/years either.

All i can say is, if communities hope to continue the art of wood fired cooking, against the relentless bombardment of tecno-feudalism, like minded people should at least try, as much as possible, to help one another preserve the ways of the past.  One day and most likely in a time of need, it will be amongst the greatest of honor to be able to provide these skills to our fellow man.
