Parade of Sandwiches and Other Stuff - Partola Uno

It's been 10 weeks since our last parade so we will cut out about half the sandwiches and other stuff we would normally post.  We want to promote good, well balanced lunches just like the ones we had in grade school 50 years ago but we don't want to go so overboard that they compete with or are nearly as good as the ones kids enjoy in public schools today.  There might be some other stuff that sneaks in there now and again.

My stomach is growling at the moment and these photos are not helping any.....I get a bland diet today due to the ravaging of a local stomach bug that though it could find a hide out in my body...none of your delicacies would fit into the 'bland' diet mode I am in at the moment so I am going to go and have a bowl of plain yogurt and try to get my appetite to forget about these wonderful platters of food....I so love the colors you include in all of your meals.  How lucky the people who get to sit at your table!

Take Care,

Janet

Janet, I couldn't help but sympathise with you on you dietary ordeal. My mom is also inflicted with stomach problems, and is restricted from so many types of food. She also take refuge in yogurt, boiled eggs and so forth. i really hope this is a passing thing, and that may you recover soon.

all the best,

khalid

How did the shots turn out Khalid?  Hopefully they were not going to give you the same steriod that is killing people here - seemingly every day.

Tummy Troubles leave you alone soon.  You noticed we like a variety of fresh, uncooked, fruits and veggies of contrasting yet complimentary colors with our lunch.  It's more; healthy with maximum nutrients and ....festive.  What looks good - tastes better too.  No one goes hungry around here.  Now that I eat better and lost 60 pounds - we are all thin too.  You are what you eat they say.  I don't know if this saying has any truth in it but if it does.... we are happy enough.  Folks need more happiness these days it seems.  A nice lunch will make anyone happy!

Get well

You can make lunch or dinner for me any time DA!

What a beautiful parade of food you have orchestrated!

Your apprentice must be very proud and jealous you are sharing it with all to see!

Be on the look-out tomorrow for a special treat from my main helper Mookie...he has been begging me for his turn in the spotlight.

Regards,
Ian

You know what you can expect to get on any given day!  Glad you liked the spread.  My apprentice sleeps 16 hours a day so she probably won't notice the post - and didn't need her for typing like usual posts.

Well, you did name your other blog after Mookie so he's never out of the spotlight for very long.  Mookie sounds very pushy like my apprentice, when she is not sleeping.  It must be a required trait that apprentices have to have and hold dear.

Will look for Mookie Bread.

Great collection of photos, DA! You must be a fit guy, eating all healthy.... Or, an obsessive foodie :)

your bread truly compliments your dishes well.

I bake bread just to make lunches.  But you are correct.   I am a fit, obsessive foodie too.  These is nothing about food I don't like and was glad to have a career in the food business  - even though it was ....fattening...... which is why I try to eat better now a days :-)  Glad you like the the photos.  My wife says I'm nuts to take them and double nuts to post them.

Can't have a decent sandwich for lunch without some decent bread holding it all together !  If I was younger, I would own and operate  a bakery that served breakfast and lunch - just like the ones we are fortunate to eat every day.

Glad you liked the post.

Oh wow!  The best looking food I have seen in a long time. Are you sure that you are not a chef in disguise?

I'm still a closet cook.  It's my apprentice that thinks she is a chef :-)  I made 4 more posts like this one numbered 2-5 and made sure to include Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese just for you.  I did a Thai chicken green curry for you this time.  You will spot it easy.  Wish I could try out your Thai - made by a real chef! You will spot a Pho too.  Enjoy!

Thanks for your kind comments mantana.

That cake thing with the bumps and the nice brown top, looks like the Depression cake which was a staple in my mother's house, ate lots of that for breakfasts! She made hers with peanut butter (the oilier the better) instead of lard, its also known as eggless butterless, milkless cake, or wartime cake. The only thing she ever put in it, was the raisins, and one year she had jars of Sunny Jim peanut butter which if it sat for a long time, gathered oil on top, so she would mix it all up, put it in the cake, so we had peanut raisin cake! It was the only way I ate peanut butter. Unfortunately I can't eat it on toast or bread, so cake and cookies is the only way!

The sandwiches are all lovely, and I never saw such a nice one in my school lunch, and doubt that any school here has any like it.

Today though it cheers me up, as the snow has started here and I am very down, winter is not a good time of the year for me. So need the sunny colours and the lovely fresh looks.

Depression and specially Wartime cake didn't have any sugar in it either with the rationing going on!    That cake is as far away from those cakes.  2 kinds of sugar, 4 kinds of bourbon soaked dried fruit,  1 kinds of nuts, chocolate chips. chocolate covered raisins, bananas....  It is about the most decadent Banana Bread you can find.  So much so, I usually make it as frosted and iced cupcakes and cake.  In AZ we don't get the real cold but we love  this time of year when the temps finally go below 100 F after 6 months near or over it.  Our depression time comes in March knowing 100 F will probably be hit sometime at the end of it.

I would think that winter coming to Dawson Creek would be depressing since that means no more going to the back or front yard and panning for all that easy and nearly free gold!

You are right we never have had lunches in school like these and the kids don't today either but they should!  I guess they will have to wait till they retire :-)

Glad you likes the food photos.

mom made it originally with bacon grease, raisins and flour, you literally boil the raisins, and lard together, and let cool, then add in the flour and spices and pour into a pan, and bake. Like I said she had left over very oily Sunny Jim peanut butter one time, and used that in place of the lard, never did go back to lard or bacon grease. It isn't a sweet cake, but very heavy and filling, we used to have a chunk for breakfast somtimes, or mostly for after school snack to tide us over to supper. I have iced it with the same cream cheese icing as carrot cake which is tasty! Don't often ice it, because then I have to find room in the fridge for it!

Right now I'd not mind the 100 degree weather, we have had about 6 inches of snow in the last two days, and that is after that much or more for the 4 days before, its getting a bit annoying, the roads are not good, the weather while not too cold is not pleasent, and I can't run the snow blower which really needs to be done so the drive is not a mess. I have a 300 foot long up hill drive, which isn't so bad getting down with snow on it, but getting back up can be a pain.  4 wheel drive is my best friend!

what Moms could do in a pinch with bacon grease!  But what they could do with oil separated peanut butter takes the ....cake... if you could call it that :-)

So do you do any panning for gold in Dawson Creek?  I'm pretty sure I would and would have to give up baking bread to do so if necessary.  Gold panning is like bread making.  You get better at making bread and you want to bake more of it.  You find a little gold and you want to find more.  I think gold could be more profitable but at least you can eat bread :-)

Seeing your 300 foot uphill drive with snow on it in my mind makes me feel better about the heat but now it is in the 80's every day and last night it finally got into the the high 50's for the first time.   These are the good times here and will be until the end of March maybe.  The earliest we can remember it hitting 100 F here was March 18th.  Almost every place has its good times when it comes to weather.  San Diego is good all the time though and I dream about how nice it was to live there long ago.   Was stationed there when in the Navy.  Should have bought a house there when the home values crashed in 2008 :-)  Never get affordable again in my lifetime.

the oil back in, but it certainly was easier than using the bacon grease at times. I still make it with peanut butter, just try to find the best "natural" stuff I can find, without it being cost prohibiative, since you can't seem to get anything in the grocery store that isn't full of sugar to "stablize" it!

I think you are a tad confused, I live in Dawson Creek BC which is mile zero on the Alaska Highway, not Dawson City Yukon which is where the gold panning is done mostly. Although in the 30's and 40's some gold was panned from the Peace River in the area here.

My brother had a miner's permit and did panning in any number of spots including Quesnel BC, and the Nation River area of BC which is west of us, never did get a lot of gold, although there are those who do make some money at it. Of course no panning in winter as the snow is nasty to work in, and the cold worse, and of course is you are placer mining the water is usually frozen up!

I have also played with a gold pan, hard darn work (need a lot of those lovely sandwiches to keep up strength) and you would probably made more gold with a bakery than with the pan!

Good Morning dabrownman:

I am sorry for not responding to you earlier . I was busied teaching cooking and then did a luncheon on Oct. 16,apply for teaching at the Lynchburg Community college( culinary arts) on the 17 and flew to FL. on the 18 . I just got back 2 days ago and now have to get us ready for Sandy storm . Anyway, if you are coming to see your brother in Lynchburg, you can contact me and I will teach you Thai dishes for free.(You can bring me some avocado, hint, hint!)

Looking at all your sandwiches, it is vibrant in color and texture and I am sure that it tasted great. Even though you said that you are not a chef, your foods are up there with them. Your veggies and especially avocado are first rate.  We, in my area, will never get the first rate veggies and fruits like yours at all. Sigh!

I  save most of your post in my favorite file to re-read and drool!

kind mantana.  I don't know when I will be getting out to Lynchburg to see my twin.   When I lived in Richmond  I would see him all the time  but from Phoenix it is way more difficult.  I will get out there hopefully next spring and will give you a IM when I do.  I would love to be taught Thai by a pro!  How exciting!  Avocados are  up in price here now at 4 for a buck but still cheap enough to eat a couple a day.

The spell checker is so smart it told me Lynchburg was spelled wrong and to replace it with Lunchbox.  Now I am hungry for lunch and its only breakfast:-)

Happy baking.
