If anyone who has a grain mill is also interested in Yecora Rojo hard red wheat berries, there is a sale going on right now at Ancientgrains.com.  Discounts of up to 50% on 48 lbs with free shipping. That comes to about $1.60/lb, the best price I’ve ever seen for it.

If you’ve not used this variety I highly recommend you try it for its lovely flavor and silky texture of the dough that it develops. I believe it’s the primary grain in Cairnspring Mills Trailblazer bread flour, which (as of a few years ago) was used almost exclusively by Tartine Bakery here in San Francisco.

Enjoy!

I ordered 48lb from them with this deal at the beginning of July, have been very pleased with it. Definitely second the recommendation on YR, great flavor and makes great bread.

Hi Gary,

I use large 5 gal. pails, like the ones you can the from the big-box hardware stores, but certified food grade. I got some leakproof lids with screw tops such as these. I have kept whole wheat and rye berries in this setup for years now, I’ll generally go through 50 lbs. in 12-18 months or so and they keep very well in a cool basement stored in this way. Places like Breadtopia ship their whole grains in this type of bucket.

5 gallon food safe bucket with a gamma-style lid. Smaller than I expected. The whole 48lb didn't fit, total volume was probably around 7 gallons.

Shipping costs from wheat country to where I live are prohibitively expensive so small orders are not an option I can enjoy.

Do note that I'm very new to home milling. Before this I've only purchased maybe 8 lbs or so from a local bulk store. But while I'm not exactly confident I have the experience to judge these things, I do think my batch was very clean, the berries are consistent and have no issues, and the flour has both tasted and performed very close to my expectations for a spring YR (based on what I've read, never tried this variety before!)

Hope you enjoy yours as much as I'm enjoying mine! Hands down the tastiest whole wheat I've tried so far.
