Introducing BakerBot

I’m a pro-baker from the UK.   I founded and then sold Flour Water Salt in Macclesfield in Northern England.  I’d paid my dues of 12 years of early mornings and Covid lockdowns crippled the business.  Christmas 2022 after a long hard look at our books, we decided to call it a day.

Before the bakery I was a contract programmer.  To pull me out of the gloom and also to build my confidence back, I started to program again.  Having ducked out of this world years ago, things certainly have changed. “Toto we’re not in Kansas anymore”.

One of the things I promised myself in the bakery was one day I’d write a system that would deal with daily cockups: missed orders, not enough levain, run out of salt, mis-weighed the water, lost recipes, recipes on paper; in text messages; in spreadsheets.  Daily I’d get the post it notes and work things out by hand, most days I’d get things wrong.  I know I’m not the only one to do this.  I’m sure those who got ahead before their bakeries grew have their own system.  I didn’t and when we messed up it was on me and embarrassing.

So I’ve built BakerBot.  It’s a foundation for you to do some of the above.  The rest will come if I can build sustained interest.  The App Store is new to me so I’m learning as I go.  The app shows fantastic promise and I hope you’ll enjoy what I’ve achieved.

Using my camera, I scanned 2 pages of Hammelman and the output is shown below.  This isn’t staged or made up.

IIt has a nice chatty interface.  You can say “convert to cups” (I don’t know why you would but hey). You can say “add 1% honey” or “reduce hydration by 1%” and it’ll get it - in baker terms.

You can type in %s or grams or ounces - it just understands you.

I’ve been using it for a few months now and it’s really getting there.  The current version is completely free.  Obviously there will be a cost in later versions.  I’m keen to get in your hands.
