Flaking

We were running short of flaked grains. I have owned the Marcato flaker for a number of years. I have the hand crank version and got it on sale for $89.00  from an online Italian market.

I had looked up how to prep the groats and found the wonderful Food Prepper site , I’ve linked them previously. You use 2tsp of water per 2 c groats, shake several times over the first 30 min then leave covered for 24 hrs. Very important and makes flaking so easy. IF YOU DON’T over water/ wait long enough.

The hand cranking is hard to stabilize even with the countertop attachment. But there’s still the hand cranking. And my “ bad hands”. In steps TFL member Gary Bishop. Wonderful offer for a fantastic price I got a second mill AND MOTOR!!!

It’s unbelievable how easy it is. I can flake any grain. Today I did 4 dry cups each of oats and barley. So 4c of grain and 4 tsp water shake shake shake rest 24 hrs. In 10 min barley all done and 10 min all oats done!!

comparison of oats/ barley flakes- barley is a lighter color and liable to crumble a bit more than the nice big fat flakes of oats

I think about getting a grain flaker from time to time, but it helps seeing how simple the process can be.

Best wishes, Caroline

The trick is the prep. Exact amount of water + shake/shake and 24 hr rest. covered. I didn’t know if I could post a video but you can pour through at a steady rate stopping only to empty the receiver bin as needed.

The Marcato + motor isn’t cheap but there are 6 settings so it’s able to be used for other tasks unlike some of the other flakers. c🙏

Would love to know if you had success or if I can help tweak the results. It took me awhile but it’s so easy now and I want to be helpful if I can. 🙏

Yes, we had some for breakfast. It seems that setting it on 4 is the sweet spot between a good flake and not overloading the motor (that I have from my Atlas 150). I only used 2 tsp of water. Next time I'm going to try 3 and see if that makes them a little more pliable.

I don’t know how the oat groats  differ where you are. The age and size and variety I am certain makes a difference.

I leave the moistened oats in a sealed container for 24 hrs. When I tried more than 2 tsp they clogged the Marcato.

It definitely takes a bit of trial and error! I have flaked barley and Einkorn and the Oats and Kernza . The Kernza was a challenge because it’s very small like rice.

Would love to see pictures! Keep in touch. c

Did you prep for 24hrs with 2 tsp water / 2c oats ?

That’s really a necessity.

I’m just waking up lol, I put it on the closest so 0 is what I use. You can try others and put it thru again til you see what you like but smallest opening works best for me .

Good luck! Pictures!

It’s so fast and easy. Don’t use more water to prep. Just wait the full 24 hrs. It will clog if they are too damp.

Please do post back. c
