1Lb Saf instan yeast

I just purchased a 1Lb package of Saf instant yeast and I know that it will take me a year and a day to use it.  So my qestion is this, what is the best way to store such a large amount of yeast and what is the practical shelf life when stored this way.  With shiping I paid too much money for this and hope it lasts long enough for me to justify it.

I keep my instant yeast in a glass canning jar in the freezer. Since I mostly bake sourdough breads, it lasts a long time - over a year. I've had no problem using it, right out of the freezer.

I keep the bag in a freezer in a ziploc, and every once in a while pour off a couple of ounces into a jar which I keep in refrigerator.  I opened the bag more than a year ago and it still works fine.

I bought mine a year ago last March and keep it in the freezer in a tightly sealed plastic jar. Like David I use it straight from the freezer with no ill effects, A.

Some in an airtight container in the freezer and some in an airtight container in the fridge.

and I heard you say that you paid too much on the shipping, but if you add up how much you would have paid for those little pkg.'s from the grocery store I think you will be amazed how much you SAVED! It is a much better deal. And I bake more with a lb. in the fridge. If I have the ingredients here at home I will just go in and bake, if I have to go to the store to get stuff- the moment is lost.

Well I do agre that it is overall a better deal buying 1Lb online I had just finished the discussion with my wife about spending $12.00 on yeast when I made my original post.  By the way can someone direct me to alink or post it here the conversion from regular to instant yeast.  I make mostly recipes that use very small amounts of instant so that is what I ordered but there are a couple of breads that my wife enjoys that use regular yeast.

Oh my. I bought a pound of SAF instant yeast locally for $2.40 at a local restaurant supply store. Now, given the price of gasoline, if there no local store then your online purchase is a good deal.

Half is stored in the freezer and the other half in a very good airtight container in my refrigerator.

From the BBA: 100 percent fresh yeast = 40 to 50 percent active dry yeast = 33 percent instant yeast.

If not King Arthur still has it for around 5 or 6 bucks depending on the type. I usually try to combine shipping and get several things at one time. It ain't much but it helps.

Or $4.99 if you want to be picky, for 1 lb. vaccuum-sealed yeast made by Fleischmann's, made in Canada.  I buy it in a local store.

Yep shipping.  I bought it on the KA website and it was like $5.00 for the yeast and the rest was shipping.

How long can you store an unopened package in the freezer? I suppose several years as the yeast does not get into contact with niether air nor water.

I keep unopened packets of yeast in the pantry.  They're vacuum-sealed and are kept on a shelf in the store so why put it in the freezer?

No Paddy I'm talking about a 1 Pound package of instant yeast I ordered from King Arthur Flour.

Only it's Fleischmann's, and it's vacuum-packed.  Until I open it, it stays in the pantry.  I don't think I've ever seen the KAF yeast in Montreal.

I found the SAF instant yeast today at Smart and Final in Los Angeles.  One pound for 2.99 for those who are looking for it.
