RH "Heritage" Unbleached Flour

Here is what I've been using lately. First bag last week and another yesterday. I find no perceptible difference, except for cost, between this and what I was using normally, which was RH All Purpose Unbleached in the 5 kg bags.

Has anyone else used it? If so, thoughts?

but in years past, I've gotten answers to a couple of questions by contacting Smucker via the RH website, so if you don't get one here, you can try doing that.

...... about the personal experiences of others who've used it.

This came from a wholesaler who supplies this flour to what is probably the biggest and best known bakery in the city. I'll assume it's in their favour from a commercial standpoint.

For me, roughly 1/2 the cost of the 5kg bags I was buying. Now that I was complaining about the price of flour before, but hey, $20 is better in my pocket then theirs.

The Ardent Mills site says "An all purpose flour especially designed for applications where long sponge or brew type fermentations are used rather than chemical oxidation additives to improve the dough." It's not really clear what is different between this and regular RH AP flour; still milled from hard wheat and enriched.

....the main difference is wording and bag size to appeal to different customers.

Not every home baker goes through a 20 kg bag in a week!!!! ;-)

I remember seeing a post on here recently (I think it was Dani3ll3) warning people about certain lots of Robin Hood flour. Make sure that it's not on recall, otherwise you could end up sick !

.....as well as other brands. And this is safe.

Thanks for bringing that up though, some may not be aware so great point.

As all flour should be suspect. Does this mean that even if  a certain flour has been recalled, but as long as you bake it thoroughly, would one avoid becoming sick? Shouldn't you treat all flour this way anyway!?

....both from the bakery I referred to above and the wholesaler where my daughter works.

From what I understand, yes, the baked flour would be safe "IF" the flour was contaminated but the concern is what gets in the air, on your hands, utensils, etc, yadda yadda.

took the words out of my mouth. I was just about to suggest checking the bag to see if it was on the recall list.

I wonder if the bag is the same flour but just rebranded for commercial use.

I'm going through a frustrating time with flour right now too. If you check the Canadian government website regarding recalls, they have an active one for certain lots of Robin Hood flour from Ardent Mills. I buy my flour (Rogers Silver Star bread flour) in 20 kg bags here at my local Costco. It's milled in Armstrong BC by Rogers and has nothing to do with Ardent Mills or Robin Hood brands, but Costco has pulled it from the shelves and no one can tell me when it might be back. I'm down to about a third of a bag (I go through a bag a week, roughly) and will have to pay waaaaay more to buy some kind of bread flour at my local supermarket. Ironically, what the supermarkets have on their shelves for about 4 times the price is, you guessed it, Robin Hood bread flour! I hope Costco puts the Rogers flour out soon before I go out of business... :(

Hi LL.

Is that flour unbleached? Here at Costco all they have is 10 & 20 kg bags of something called "Creative Baker" that's bleached. Reports on it haven't been great so I stay away from it.

Really? I don't think there is any bleached flour here at our Costco. They have 10 kg Rogers AP flour, 20 kg Rogers Silver Star (which is a commercial bread flour) and 20 kg Rogers Coarse Whole Wheat (a processed flour that has extra bran added back in). Rogers is a BC company (they have a mill in Armstrong and, I think, also one in Chilliwack).

That is where I get my Rogers unbleached no additives flour. I probably pay more too but at least it isn't Robin Hood.

We lost all our Safeways a couple of years or so ago. However, other supermarkets here do carry Rogers flour, just not the Silver Star which is a high-protein bread flour. And certainly not for $12.49 for 20 kg as I pay at Costco! When they have it, that is. Grrrrr....

And that is a fabulous price! I pay that much for only 10 kg.

... that's why I'm a little cross with them!
