Was the mixture in its own pan/container that was set in a pot of boiling water?

Wow, never heard of boiled bread before, except partially boiled bread like bagels. I know steamed bread, but boiled bread...wow!

it says to pour batter into a cotton sack, tie off and boil in water for 3hrs. slice and serve with sause. Traditionaly it was rasberry sause at the table.

You can google the term and get a long list of descriptions and recipes.  Here's one such page.  The part about boiled puddings is Item 2, about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way down the page.

Sounds like a Scottish 'clootie dumpling' - named for the 'cloot' or cloth it was boiled in.

Eaten warm with custard for 'pudding' and even better sliced and fried with bacon for breakfast next morning!

Sounds like one to try on a scout campout. I've baked breads in a dutch oven over charcoal, but this sounds much easier.
