Sweet Vanilla Challah

Every time I make this, I am amazed at how much it expands in the oven.

Two are for a bake sale that benefits our library and one will go to our grandson in Hawaii.

How is it getting to Hawaii, and will it still be fresh? Unless you are taking it, which is a different story.

It should be fresh yet.  The bigger concern for me is that it arrives in its present shape, instead of compressed into a frisbee or a pile of crumbs.  We'll hope that a sturdy box and plenty of padding will do the trick.

I love that shape. I used to make a 4 strand crown . I’ve never had the Vanilla flavor I bet the fragrance is amazing.

Just revisited your post from 2009!!! Time flies! We moved from Opelika in 2017 to here in VA. You had mentioned Cheaha and I used to run/ bicycle and camp up there a lot. Used to do a 50k ultra in Huntsville at Monte Sano Mt. And you mentioned Traverse City. Been there as a child and then cycling across the UP. We have passed each other all over the country 😊

We have had a number of places in common, haven't we?  It's a pity we haven't been in the same place at the same time.  If you are ever in Michigan again, we'd love to have a visit.  I'll try to think to contact you if we're headed for VA again.

I made one for Thanksgiving to use in the stuffing but mine was just a boring boule.  I’m sure these will fetch a great price for your library and your son will enjoy them.

I made a Sourdough version and added some vanilla.  It came out pretty good and I made some rolls to freeze to have for later.

I also made a white SD with butter and a little FMF whole wheat.  The stuffing came out well.  My wife made enough for 20 people even though it was just the 2 of us this year :).

Man, it’s hard; really hard.  Sure, you can fix a turkey breast instead of a whole bird.  Or make just one pie instead of three or four.  But there are some things that just don’t scale down so well.  Not to mention the list of “You can’t have Thanksgiving dinner without _______” items.

On the other hand, leftover stuffing is pretty darn good.

I too have never used vanilla in challah, what a wonderful idea Paul.  I hope your challah makes it to your son intact and not compressed.
