looking for a good toast recipe

my current recipe for my bread machine is not the best for making toast when i have my coffee in the morning. my mother use to make homemade bread that was delicious toasted and even sandwiches but never got the recipe and i know it was all by hand.  but this is my recipe

  • 1 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 (.25 ounce) package bread machine yeast
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt

looking to make a better loaf any suggestions or a better recipe

...to add a sugar the yeast can't consume so that the bread browns better when toasted. Often things like powdered milk are added because yeast can't digest lactose so the available sugar can caramelise.

Any enrichment to the dough helps make a soft close crumb for a sandwich bread and will make good toast. I should have said one of the secrets for a good bread for toasting is powdered milk.

So another route would be do sub in milk for some or all of the water. This also softens the crumb somewhat in my experience.
