Greetings from Ocean View, Qld

On Good Friday while surfing the net and old bookmarks, I rediscovered The Fresh Loaf site again after many years.  It didn't take long to be inspired, so I decided it was a good time to have another go at making a starter, as it had been a good 7 or 8 years since I'd made any.

Five days later the starter was showing enough life and bubbles so I took the plunge.  Here's my first loaf with the new starter - bit of a hotch potch including grains, seeds, cocoa as well as some craisins to add a touch of sweet.

I was pretty pleased with the result and it tasted even better than what I'd remembered - or certainly hoped for.  The first six slices were just with butter on the still warm fresh loaf - just heaven!  Several neighbours and friends have also taste tested subsequent loaves and I already have a loyal following.  :)

Each loaf I've made I've used my dutch oven with lid on for first 20 minutes, then off for the rest.  Very pleased with the results and makes for a lovely round and domed loaf.

Thanks to everyone on here who contributes - so much to learn, and so many good ideas!

Cheers

Heather

Hi from Brisbane north, that bread looks great. Do you have a local shop you source grains etc from for bread making?

Hi Kate

I've bought bread making supplies online from two places - both with excellent ranges of different flours and add ins.  Woollies & Aldi also have plenty of choice with the bits and pieces to add in as well.

Simply No Knead in Victoria - https://snk.com.au/ and Basic Ingredients here in Qld (Browns Plains I think) - https://basicingredients.com.au/

Both are able to be delivered by Australia Post which makes it all very convenient.

Happy baking!

Heather

I’ve ordered from basic ingredients and bakeandbrew.com.au but haven’t tried the other one you mentioned yet. Woolies have a pretty good collection of flours when they have them in stock.. Thanks for your help :)
