Cañadas de Azúcar – for Canada Day

Hello everyone, and  Happy Canada / Happy Cañada  Day!

This is a Spanish bread called Cañadas de Azúcar, baked for today,Canada’s national holiday.

I can’t remember where I first read about this bread – liking the name, I wanted to bake Cañadas for Canada Day :^)
I searched online and found a blog entry about this bread here

Cañada translates to “gulley” or “ravine”, and Azúcar means sugar; so this is a good name for this flatbread,
with its dimpled surface and sugared topping!

In tribute to Canada’s maple trees, I used maple syrup and maple sugar
in my version.

 …summertime maple leaf

Cañadas before baking, partway through the bake (removed from oven to brush on butter/olive oil and sprinkle with maple sugar), then returned to oven for a little bit longer to finish:

A lovely 'hint of maple' bite to have with morning coffee :^)

 ...couldn't have just one!

There have been pretty flowers blooming, so for our national holidays, here are some blooms...

Red and white for Canada

Red, white and blue, for the American TFL’ers about to celebrate the Fourth!

And how about some fireworks for this time of year? The stamens on these flowers seemed to display ‘fireworks’ so I’m including these photos as part of my holiday wishes :^)

Happy baking, and happy holidays, everyone!

Leaves me wanting a beavertail!

Would check out the link but it brings me back to this same page.

Happy Canada Day :-)

Hi,
I fixed the link - sorry about that;
hmmm, beavertail, had to look that one up; haven't ever seen one of those - not much of a Canadian now, am I?

Hard to believe, but I would never question someone's Canadian-ness, lol.    I'm sure your version is healthier!

. . . Happy Canada Day!  Those look yummy and I really like the taste of maple syrup, so I will have to give these a go.  Thanks for sharing.  Todays Canada Day project:  Chocolate Foam from Macella Hazan's, The Classic Italian Cookbook, an old dog eared, falling apart paperback copy I have had for at least 30 years.

Hi Brian,
Thank you so much and hope you enjoy making Marcella's Chocolate Foam.
That's a cookbook I've always been meaning to get.

Happy Canada Day breadsong.  Thanks for this post.  Never seen that type of bread before.  Nice!

Cheers with a bottle of Sleeman.

Thanks John!
It's quite warm here today, just got in from mowing the lawn, thinking about cracking open a
GIB Kitsilano Maple Cream Ale myself!

Actually I feel ashamed.  I will be cracking open a Dos Equis.  When in Arizona, I picked up too many SOL and Dos Equis.  So cheap!!  Kind of anti-Canadian on Canada Day, hey?  No wait, it still qualifies as beer!  The hell with it.

No wait, I done good.  At White Rock today I had a Stanley Park Pilsner.  If that doesn't wave the flag, I don't know what does.

Have a good one!

You are always so creative with your breads and this one is no exception!

Love the flowers.  Happy Celebration to you and I like the fireworks flower photo.  No fireworks for us here this year due to how dry we are and the fires we have been having.  My 16 year old son is very distressed about not being able to 'light up the sky' at the end of the drive on the 4th.  Perhaps he will enjoy your flower shot....though I kinda doubt it *- )

Thanks for sharing your creativity!
Take Care,

Janet

Hi Janet,
Thank you so much!
Happy you like the flowers, not a substitute for a real fireworks show though.
Sorry about the dry conditions and fire - I hope your area gets the rain it needs.

Hi Khalid,
Mmm, this bread was a pleasure to eat - a fresh cañada with morning coffee was a dream come true (it's been too long since I've had time to bake - I've missed fresh, homemade bread!).
Thank you so much for your holiday greeting!

Hi Ian,
You often have lovely pictures of flowers in your posts - you are a gardener?!
These flowers, save for those in the last picture, are all ones I've found when out and about - wish they were all growing in my garden.
Thanks for your Canada Day wish, and hope you have a Happy Fourth!

All the maple goodness in your breads, just perfect for a 'Happy Canada Day'!  Lovely pictures of the flowers and perfect maple leaf.  Thanks for sharing all!

Sylvia

Hi Sylvia,
Thank you so much - the bread itself wasn't really sweet, the sprinkle of maple sugar on top giving a delicate flavor and sweetness. I was happy with the flavor, having found maple flavor elusive to capture in the final taste of bread.
Glad you like the flowers and maple leaf! Was on a trail in the woods, looked up and there was the maple leaf, nicely lit in the filtered sunlight.
I just saw the pies and baking you've made for Fourth of July - wow!
Blueberries are making their appearance at farm stands here this week, so maybe this weekend I'll have time to make a blueberry pie (my husband's favorite)!

Hi Andy,
Thanks you, and appreciate your wishes for rye baking as well - there may be some UK-Bacheldre coming back with Franko, who may be so kind to share with me :^)
So kind of you to send the flour along with Franko; I bet you two had an amazing time baking together!

A perfect tribute bread for the Holiday - with the right name too!  Nice baking and enjoy a fine, if expensive, Canadian beer too!  Every time I go to the Wine Store in the Fall, Winter and Spring months to get hooch, it is packed with Canadian Snow Birds buying out the store before they go home due to ungodly taxes on alcohol in Canada.  Since they are driving from AZ, they can haul a lot and smuggle cheap booze back to Canada to last them until they come to AZ again next year.  Canada doesn't have alcohol sniffing dogs at the border :-)

Happy baking Breadsong!

I stocked up!  Not nearly enough to last the summer though.

Hi dabrownman,
Prices do seem better in the US, and the varieties of beer, cider, etc. available in the US is astounding (another reason why the Canadians might be shopping? :^)  )
Cheers to you for your Fourth!
