Nutrimill Smells like Grinding Teeth at the Dentist

Hey guys,

I bought a used Nutrimill and tried it for the first time tonight.  Is the mildly foul smell as it puts out flour normal?  Even after its done (admittedly, right after), I stick my head into the bucket to smell the flour and it is off-putting.  You know when the dentist is grinding one of your teeth?  That smell.  That's what it smells like.  I'm fairly new to the whole baking game, but I'm erring on the side of concerned.  (Also, is it normal that some of the flour is light brown and some is darker brown?)

Perhaps this is a very used Nutrmill.  Even so, that may not matter.  I've attached a picture of the filter thing if that indicates how used it was before I bought it.

Thanks, y'all.

I have a 3 year old nutrimill and it doesn’t smell bad and the flour coming out smells like wheat. I use it weekly, so the grain residue is always being replaced.

the filter shown is a full disk of meshy plastic about a centimeter thick when new-so that one is worn out. That said, it’s only function is to prevent flour dust from getting out of the mill receptacle. I think the foul smell must be rotten or rancid flour bits stuck in the mill works. Unfortunately, the grinding works of the mill are completely sealed. Suggestion - take a few pounds of very low oil grain ( like white rice) and put it through the mill at its slowest mill speed to see if it helps clear the smell.

Last thing- it is totally normal for the milled grain to have more and less branny parts, so the darker and lighter flour is normal. I wouldn’t eat bad smelling flour, though.

Good suggestion.  It makes me wonder if the person put something oily through it and the oil has gone rancid.  Let us know if the rice works.

Found this, seems helpful and backs up what Suminandi said: https://traditionalcookingschool.com/food-preparation/how-to-clean-mockmill-grain-mill-askwardee-119/

Thanks for the comments.  Last week I put five pounds of white rice through it in one day haha It doesn't put off the strong smell as it is grinding anymore (or maybe i just don't notice it) but the flour still has an interesting smell.  This week I put five more pounds through but over three days.  Since I'm still getting an interesting smell (at least to me) from the flour, I'm going to see if there is anyone in my area that has a Nutrmill or similar and see if I can check out what there's produces.  I really appreciate y'all.
