Problem with Ankarsrum AKM 6220

I bought an Ankarsrum mixer, model AKM 6220, from an online store in Germany on April 2017 (5 months ago). I live in Brazil so I had to import because they don't sell this machine here.

Lately I noticed that while using the roller to knead bread dough, it's leaving some dark spots on the scraper and on the dough itself. After further examination I saw the dark spots are coming from the roller, more specifically from the grey part made of rubber at the top of the roller. That part is wearing out and leaving these dark particles on the bread dough.

Has anyone ever encountered this problem?

I wrote to the shop where I bought the machine from. I believe my roller needs to be replaced.

I'm also worried about my health, since I don't know if I have been eating these dark particles from breads that I mixed using my Ankarsrum :-(

How are you washing your roller?  I've had my Ankarsrum, then called a Magic Mill, for over a decade and have not noticed this happening.  It looks as though your roller is rough around the edges.

I soak my roller in warm water and then wipe mostly clean with a cloth, and then I use soap.  I do not think I've ever put it through the dishwasher, nor have I used anything rough on it when cleaning.

I believe that the Ankarsrum company is good about their warranty.

Let us know.

I think I had a bad luck, it's probably some manufacturing defect. I don't have a dish washer and I take good care of the Ankarsrum parts when washing them, I use mostly water and my fingers to remove the dough from them. And let them dry naturally...

I just found a person who had the same problem as me:

His roller looks worse than mine, but the problem is exactly the same. The upper part of the rubber is good, but the lower part is worn out.

I wrote to Ankarsrum, let's see what they say...

Thanks!

I have had my Assistent for about 9 months now and figured that rubber(?) wheel would be the first part to go. A few minutes ago I peeled the wheel off of my roller to get a better look at it. It has the following markings:

43505642   VM   7/25   NBR

I couldn't find anything related to this through a web search so I dropped a note to Ankarsrum support in Sweden, just to see if they might sell the replacement wheel separately. I remain hopeful that they will provide a part number and price, or maybe forward me to their supplier. Ankarsrum surely does not make this wheel themselves.

I'll provide any updates if I receive them.

Thanks Jim,

Mine has:

4350564 2 VM 20/25 NBR

I found the roller with wheel selling for $35 on Pleasant Hill Grain's website. The problem (for me) is that they don't ship to Brazil.

I'll post updates here if I receive a reply from Ankarsrum.

Thanks

I have an older Ankarsrum and the components are very similar ( but I don't have any wear).

Because it's the bottom part of the rubber ring on the roller that is crumbling, I'm wondering if it is rubbing against anything that would cause that to happen.  Since the top of the bowl has a rolled rim, and the rubber ring rubs against the rim, is there a sharp edge on the rolled rim?

If so, that might mean you have a bowl problem instead of a roller problem...

I have a much older model, when it was sold under the Electrolux name, but the rubber is actually a very hard rubber, with extremely little give, and definitely does not have any of the flaking that I see on yours.  While it might be the bowl, you should be able to rule that out just by carefully running your hand over the inside edge to make sure it feels smooth.

Hi Leo

I bought my Ank last summer  over the last few weeks i have been having a problem very similiar to you I live in the UK I contacted my supplier and he said he has had this issue  with other people He has suggested cleaning the hole that you insert the scraper with some "spirit" with ear buds I have just done it and lots of black has been removed I have now left a very small amount of spirit ( gin by the way !!) in 1to soak overnight and I will give it another clean in the morning My supplier has offered me another scraper   Will keep you posted

Hope you have sorted your issue if you have any tips let me know

Thanks

My machine is an older one.  The way I use my mixer, I never have that rubber part rubbing on the side of the bowl at all.  I let the dough itself turn the roller and don't  use the edge of the bowl to turn the roller.

I suspect you have your roller adjusted to run against the rim of the bowl and when the dough pushes the roller upwards, that is why the bottom is worn and top isn't.  (you could turn the rubber around so the unworn side is on the bottom and if you continue using it the same way, I suspect you would start to see the new bottom side wear like the old one did).  But if you start adjusting your roller so it is an inch or two away from the side of the bowl, you won't see those flakes in the future.

My older machine has a hard rubber that doesn't flake like yours.  I've heard reports of people with the newer ones seeing the black rubber flakes in their dough.    The mfg needs to formulate a different rubber and replace all those defective rubber pieces - but I never, ever need the rubber to roll against the edge of the bowl.

I made a short video of the kneading action I use where the roller isn't running against the edge.  It gives a very gentle stretch and I get very good results and this method would solve the problem of the rubber bits in your dough.
