Help re corn milling!

I'm a proud and excited new owner of a Mock Mill.  A friend gifted me a bag of field corn bought from a farmer near them.  Needless to say, one would want it clean prior to milling.  Can it be washed, do I use anything in particular to wash it, how does one ever get it dry prior to grinding, other options?  Help, such a 'cornundrum'!

First, you might want to double check on just what kind of corn it is...as field corn that is typically used for feed is not so tasty.

I'm not so sure about cleaning options.

For grinding, I typically do a couple passes...once with the burrs relatively loose just to get things down to a reasonable size, then again with the burrs set for whatever target I'm shooting for (I often sift in between these two steps, and if going for all finer particles, then I sift again and grind whatever is left in my seive).

Good luck...

The grain shouldn't be dirty.  If it is, don't eat it.

That said, I spread out my maize on the counter and remove any bits of cob or silk or bad kernels before milling.

Thanks for the helpful info.  I think the critters may be the lucky recipients of this bag of corn and I'll find myself a bag of organic corn to grind.
