Wild Flour Bread

Today a friend and I took a little trip up to the tiny town of Freestone to visit the popular Wild Flour Bread bakery. They bake sourdough bread in a wood fired oven. I gotta say I think their stellar reputation is well deserved! Here is the menu:

This time around I chose the "Wonder" white sourdough and the "Wildflour" loaf. Also had to try the lemon blueberry poppy seed, peach pecan, and apple cherry marzipan scones.

The scones were outstanding!

And the sourdough loaves were very tasty. More sour than I expected it to be. Not sure why I expected them to be less sour, but they were quite tangy. The wheat is on the left and the white sourdough on the right:

And here is a shot of their oven:

I definitely look forward to going back and trying some of their other breads and the sticky bun, which I hear is absolutely delicious.

might be a post on the Wildflower Bread Company the Phoenix Area which doesn't make bread but does make bagels and all kinds of other bakery stuff  http://www.wildflowerbread.com/locations/  They have a lot of locations and do make the bread and rolls for their restaurants and I know they make SD bread for other restaurants too.

This one really makes SD bread.  I'm wondering what bread was erased between sticky buns and rye?  All the baked goods look so good and well made - and reasonably priced for a CA bakery too!  Thanks for posting this Kathy

It seems that naming a bakery "Wild Flour" is not uncommon! It is a good name for a bakery.

This is our absolute favorite bakery!  When we weekend in Bodega Bay we hit this stop at least twice.  Plan ahead for Sunday mornings though.  There will be 75 people in line!  It's that popular.  One time when we stopped in we inadvertently spent more than we had in cash.  Embarrassed!  They just wrote the amount on the back of one of their business cards and said, "Just send us a check." and sent us on our way.  We could not wait to mail that check along with a thank you for their generous attitude.

There is also a very nice "local" boutique cheese shop about a mile past Wild Flour Bread in Freestone.  Not all their cheeses are local to N. Ca. but they do carry a great many of the options.  The Pt Reyes Bleu is excellent.

We didn't get a chance to stop there. I am hoping that we will be able to check the cheeses next time!

We were fortunate that the bakery wasn't packed out this time. There were quite a few people there, but not uncomfortably. The one time I had visited the bakery several years ago, it was really crowded!

That's one of the bakeries brother Glenn has recommended in Sonoma County. We haven't gotten to it ... yet! Must go there!
