BDS? "Baking Deprivation Syndrome"

Recently, i've been suffering from BDS between bakes, or when my bread reserve dwindles.

Should i feel OK with that? I don't know.. am i not getting a Life? Possibly, yet, I may just be another Home Baker. I can live with that ;)

What's itching me further is that i, like many, was diagnosed with a mild Lumbar disc hernisis, and therefore with no Bread on plan for the week end.

I'll be baking, nonetheless.

When I'm not baking bread I enjoy the break by catching up on reading and thumbing through bread books...or bake an easy pastry!  Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for the support, Eric and Sylvia.. I plan on reducing the physical effort i put into my loaves. But i shall continue baking..

Thanks again..

we should open up a BDS support group with an uneasy 12-step program:

1. Give away any breads left in your freezer - do NOT eat them down!

2. Use all the sourdough starter in your next bake - do NOT leave enough to make a new one!

3. Let your spouse or lazy kids do the shopping - do NOT go near the baking aisle!

4. Avoid contact to other bread users - do NOT let them invite you to dinner!

5. Visit only restaurants that serve potato chips with meals - do NOT treat yourself with fine dining!

6. Delete the link to King Arthur in your Bookmarks - do NOT sneak in the NYbakers or another bakery instead!

7. Mark messages from amazon.com as spam, and empty the spam folder often - do NOT take a peek first!

8. Donate your baking books - do NOT try to sell them at amazon because you might be tempted to stray!

9. Bury your flours, yeast and other bread making substances - do NOT claim poor old Granny needs a birthday cake!

10. Get rid of your baking paraphernalia, have somebody take them to the dump - do NOT keep a sheet pan with the lame excuse the kids want Christmas cookies.

11. Go on the Atkins diet  (this is a tough one, but people have been known to do it) - do NOT visualize crusty loaves when you gag on your tenth strip of bacon.

12. Finally, cancel your internet connection - do NOT let yourself being trapped again by that dangerous website (code name: TFL) trying to suck you back in!

My name is Karin, and I am a baker...

Is it just me?

when I read your number 2 item, I literally felt sick to my stomach, a sharp imaginary pain hit me hard....

the thought of using up my starter leaves me in complete panic

That is Hilarious, Karin, thanks for your feedback! But then you'd have to eat commercial bread, Right? I believe your approach is far too probibitive. The reason why i chose to bake at home was to make a healthy choice, and to satisfy a hobby of mine. I would strive to stop short of obsession when baking, by resisting temptation of buying any unnecessary additional gear or ingredient other than i need. Bake to Live, Not live to Bake..

Thank you Daisy for the advice! I do all my kneading by hand (Richard bertinent's slap and fold for wet doughs, and conventional kneading for stiffer doughs). I have to be wary of my posture while kneading, but it's the kitchen cleanup i'd have to worry about. ! .I'll have to look up on details of how to air knead.

Thank you so much for you kind words, Daisy!

Sour Dough Starter Deprivation Syndrome?  Or would that be a specialty deprivation?  Like RBDS? although many are related and have cross over effects.

Insufficient amounts of rye do not show up in blood tests.  One way to recognize individuals with rye deprivation -- typical questions start with  "Are ye..."  (example>) "R' ye going to the bakery?"  (variation>)  "How 'R' ye doing?"  Trying to get rye where ever they can.  Even changing the word why for rye.  "Rye me?"  "Rye not?"  "Rye don't I give you a lift?"

SDSDS has more compulsory symptoms like watching the clock and having to be home for "feedings" and could be complicated with purchasing thermometers and home kits for testing water.  The behavior can be remedied only by sniffing sufficient quantities of mature sour dough starter.  Which may be risky in certain individuals leading to more aggressive baking behavior but also leads to the following questions:

  1. Could SDSDS be cured with aroma therapy alone?  And if so:
  2. Could RBDS and SDSDS aroma therapies be combined using a rye sourdough starter?
  3. Could rye sourdough aroma therapy alone lead to BDS?

It has been documented in persons without a documented case of BDS, RBDS or SDSDS that when the rye sourdough aroma has be applied (they sniffed a mature rye starter) that they suffered an immediate case of BDS, joined a baking internet site and showed symptoms of SDSDS with all the emotional ups and downs that comes with the syndrome.

So it is with great hesitation that I should ask:  Would aroma therapy (the smell of fresh baked bread) relieve severe BDS symptoms?

I think i suffer from SDSDS too, Mini. Yesterday i refreshed my dormant starter , and i felt instantly relieved. Aroma of a ripe starter also helps.

Man, now i must be a complete pervert..

yes, the smell of freshly baked bread would relieve the symptoms, Mini, but unfortunately only for a short time, until this aroma spike would trigger the BCC (bread craving center) in the brain, and even more sourdough ogling, dough slapping (see Khalid!), loaf fondling and other highly dubious behaviours will follow.

The FBI is meanwhile looking into suspicious activities by people under the influence of BDS, SDSDS and RBDS, who habitually exchange explicit photos with lurid details via certain internet sites!

Hi mebake, I always wondered what that malady was, I know I get a bit panicky when my bread reserves dwindle also, but that is only part of it. When I can't get it all together for a bake, I tend to become impatient with myself till the baking urge kicks in. The Holidays and other distracions are often enough to put me off my stride, and I seem to have to work up to the propper Urge. I hope that Lombar thing is a quickly passing inconvenience.  Ray

Such a cruel list.  I obviously need to visit a support group nightly.  I could delete the King Arthur link (I know it by heart)  Thanks for the great laugh.

Pam

PS After letting our baking gene run wild before Thanksgiving, one can suffer serious BDS just being in "dishes hell" after Thanksgiving. You need to be constantly on guard.

Sorry about the back.  Maybe this is he time to buy yourself a nice new mixer.

Thank you Daisy for the Link, though No video was loaded.

I made that up Ray, there may be no such thing as a BDS, or could there be? As for my Lower back pain, its a chronic thing.. and will not heal completely.

I promised myself not to indulge in any more BRG "Bread Related gears", Pam,  So i'll stick hand kneading, but will avoid swiveling my waist while doing so.But thanks.

Hi khalid, if there is no such  thing as BDS, then there should be. Because then, we would have something to blame for just about any of our moods. Ray

Daisy, are you sure that is air kneading, or are the bakers just trying to get that dough to let go of their hands?  Ray

Thanks, Daisy!

Ray, i think i got the idea of the air kneading. You hold the dough with one hand and continuously stretch back and forth with the other hand.

I shall try it, with a wet dough.

I am pleased you got my little joke. The method of air kneading looks like it might be useful. I intend to watch the video again to garner anything missed the first time. The more tools I have the better. Soon I'll be able to impress my wife. Another little joke...very little.  Ray

I watched the video several times before I understood the rotation of the dough in the more passive hand. A new segment of dough is being stretched each time. Neat.  Thanks Daisy for the link.  Ray
