Ten years of being a baker.

Hi all,

So 150 million years ago I had a sort of compulsion to give up the day job, pick up the peel and become a baker.  It may not have been exactly 150 million years ago, the timeline is a little fuzzy, but it sure does feel like a long time to me.

In the intervening years I did go on to realise my ambition and after many a misadventure along the way I'm sitting here today writing this post in a comfortable sunlit booth in the front of my own little bakery in a pleasant seaside town in the north east of England.

It's a special day today as it marks 10 years since I first opened the doors to the public and began baking bread for the neighbourhood.  There have been many people passing through the door since then and many a friendship formed. It's no day to  to celebrate however as it's Saturday tomorrow, the most important day of the bakery week and if the shop is to be filled in the morning then the dough must go on now.

I thought I would post a link to a YouTube video that I made last Christmas as I think it gives an  insight into the life of a small commercial baker.

That I am still here in my shop baking away is testament I think that through the application of hard work dreams can be realised and that by learning to correctly combine the base materials of flour and water it is possible to transmute a certain king of gold.

The video I think also serves as a warning to anyone considering going down the path of earning one's crust as a commercial baker.  Sometimes in life you need to be careful what you wish for!
