Floyd, an idea!

Floyd, an idea!

Just a suggestion mind you. I know you're very busy and have enough to think about and i'm not sure if it's even possible however...

Is it possible, and a good idea, if one is commenting on a thread and you wish to mention someone then putting their name after an @ sign can alert them?

Say i'm answering a question and I think you have the answer then I can say something like: "@Floyd is our host and he'll be able to help you". And then a counter will appear next to "my account" at the top of the page alerting you. You can click on it and it takes you straight to the conversation?

Definitely a good idea but not something I am going to be able to add to the site anytime soon.

The platform this site runs on will reach EOL (end of life) in Nov 2022. Before then I need to port the site to an upgraded version of the software or a different platform. That is going to be a decent amount of work, though I've been doing similar upgrades/migrations at my day job for a number of months so I am aware of what it takes to make it happen. But it is a lot of work! Until that is done, I am not likely to do much development on the site since that work will get thrown out in less than a year.

Whether this feature would be feasible on the updated platform, I don't know. It is a nice thing to have on a site.

I realise it would be a lot of work and I know you are very busy. Can't be easy keeping a website like this while doing other things. So perfectly understood.

But the idea is out there and if you're able to make it happen in the future i'm sure it'll be a good addition.

Thank you, Floyd.

There is a certain amount of upkeep required but, honestly, the site has been pretty stable and maintenance isn't too bad.

The biggest change for me has to do with how much capacity I have to do development here. In the early days of this site I had a job where we'd have weeks of meeting before making even small changes to the website. That meant I had a lot of extra time and curiosity. Having this site to tinker with was something I quite enjoyed.

Now I am at an agency where I do development pretty much non-stop every day. It's a great place and we do work for fantastic clients, but after a full week of coding my brain is just done. I rarely find myself with the extra time and attention that make me eager to do more work here. So I've kept it to a minimum, even though I realize there are a lot of things that could/should happen here.

Makes me appreciate all the work even more. Thank you Floyd.

I truly appreciate everything you do to make the site the great place it is, and will start saving some of my favorites locally in case there is down time during migration!
