King Arthur mix up

i recently bought a bag of KA white AP flour and I opened it today to make Hokkaido Milk Bread. Moving right along, I was just busy measuring and weighing and didn’t notice. However, I looked at my dough in the mixer and noticed it was golden brown. I felt the dough, obviously whole wheat. I checked the newly opened bag and it said Unbleached White, in the standard red bag.

has this ever happened to anyone? I contacted KA on Facebook and they swear they have never heard of this happening, but are looking into it. Surely, I am not the only bag of this in the US.

I am laughing, but I am perplexed. Imagine my surprise. Oh well, a bit extra milk in the dough and I am on my way to whole wheat Hokkaido bread!

It is hard to imagine this happening to just one bag, rather than to 50 or 100 or 1000 bags.

it is also hard to imagine that it is new news. Lol It isn’t a big deal for me, whole wheat is actually preferred, but I am not baking the bread for me today. Lesson learned? Always double check the contents.

They may have known already, but decided it's better for business to not announce it - when you're big enough that someone is paid to answer the phone, you can make that decision.

As far as I know all of KA's flours are contract produced by various mills.  This doesn't make the "bad", just one piece of the puzzle.  At one time about 20 plus years ago KA was just a flour jobber supplying mostly bakeries and I believe they were even down to just 5 employees.  They had very high standards and wanted their flour to work the same from bag to bag.

They are my go to bread flour unless I visit family in Canada and can bring back a 20 kg bag of Canadian bread flour.

Thank you - I had no idea. Knowing that they don't physically control the process, their response makes a lot more sense.
