Would you look at that...

A right sidebar! We have a right sidebar! Whoo hoo!

Ok, if you aren't a geek you probably don't care, but I think it is neat. If you are running at 1024x768 or less you won't see it, but that is ok because it isn't critical information. If you are running at a high resolution, it is an added bonus.

Of course it looks perfect in Safari and Firefox but a bit funky in IE. If you are still browsing in IE, I beseech you to download Firefox. Even non-techies find it a much nicer browser than IE.

The right sidebar gives me a good are to show off many of the beautiful things people have baked and posted to the site over the years. I'll be digging through the archives and adding more thumbnails into the rotation in the next few days. Not tomorrow though: jury duty.

I baked a miche tonight. Probably the prettiest I've baked yet. I'll try to get photos in the morning.

Good job, Floyd!  This site is really looking snazzy!

Floyd, maybe you can tell me why I have to pan to the right to see the new sidebar? I have Firefox. I am not being critical - I am totally in awe of what you do and wish I understood some of the technical terms. Like drupal! I have also noticed some of the posts are cut off on the right hand side, just a word or two. I'll second what Sue said, TFL IS looking snazzy, A.

What screen resolution are you running?

Support for tables in the user formatting. Would allow use to present recipes and instructions in a lot more clear format. There are alternate BBCode modules out there to allow it, or perhaps a different HTML input filter option?

I'd be happy to do some work on this for you (kind of low on contracts right now anyway). Let me know.

I think you should be able to create tables now. Give it a shot. Be sure to close your tags out though: I'm betting you could thoroughly fubar a page by leaving a table open.

dolfs's picture
dolfs

I can now produce this:

IngredientPercentUS VolumeMetric Weight
Bread Flour100%3 1/8 C506 g
Water28%5/8 C142 g
Salt1.60%1 3.4 t8.1 g
Instant Dry Yeast1.17%1 3/4 t5.9 g
Pumpkin Puree23%6 1/2 T110g
Cardamom, ground0.19%1/2 t912 mg
Ginger, ground0.18%1/2 t859 mg
Sugar14%5 1/4 T52.8 g
Vegetable Oil11%3 3/4 T47.4 g
Egg9.88%1 large47.4 g
I'm still working on something a little better looking, but it will be somewhat cumbersome because I can not include CSS styles. One way around that would be to standardize the site on a table format for recipes and have you add the necessary CSS to the Drupal main style sheets. For now, I think this is already quite an improvement.

I like! Is it supposed to show on the main page? I only see it when I'm looking at a post.

DorotaM's picture
DorotaM

No - he didn't put it on the main page because over there a lot of stuff was going on already.

But since we had all these discussions about reading of actual posts and going with fixing a column width to make for less eye-roaming, it left all this blank space floating out on the side on the widescreen laptops we had so this seemed a nice visual fix to that.

Well, it looks beautiful. Very eye catching.

And I really like that it's dynamic! Oops, there's Peter R. peeking at me!

I was on earlier and loved the look of the right side bar, but now the side bar isn't visible and I have the posts running off to the left. Example..above I see : the words Your Name..the "Your" is in the light brown, "name" is in the yellow and there is a line running vertically before "Your" and one before "name"..something wrong on my end?

Floydm's picture
Floydm

Um... I'm not sure? You could try holding down shift while refreshing the page maybe?

That is weird that it worked earlier but isn't working now. Hmmm...

Paddyscake's picture
Paddyscake

I dunno..but I noticed again that stars for rating a comment jump all over the place if I try to click on them..gremlins?

DorotaM's picture
DorotaM

ooh I see what you mean! that's kind of cool - disco stars! It seems to only happen if your mouse cursor is rolling over the stars. funky :)

I suspect he wont take too much time to figure that one out though, as it doesnt seem to affect the functionality.

dolfs's picture

I am using Safari 3.0.4 on Mac and no disco stars here. So, note for Floyd: It has something to do with a CSS incompatibility with certain browsers most likely in the rollover code for the stars.

TY dstroy..no one else mentioned it..I thought, OK..is it just our computers? Now I feel better. No big deal if Floyd doesn't bother with it..I'll just give kudos directly, just as easy

I'm seeing the same thing that Paddyscake is talking about. Like the whole page is misaligned or something. My monitor is a 22" widescreen and resolution is 1024 x 768. Should I be running a different setting? My computer is new and that is what it was set at from the factory.

on this page/comments page or on the front page?

I have seen that when there's threads with a whole bunch of comments, the sidebar moves off to the right off the screen more and more, so really active topics here the sidebar wont be visible I think.

Is it on all the pages you see it act weird? The problem with remote troubleshooting is we cant be sure we see what you do! I've been showing Floyd the site on my windows iE and Firefox (and am amazed at how ridiculously hard it is to make a page just look "the same" in them!) and he's been checking in his Mac but the more info the better!

It's fine now--no more strange stuff. It was on all the pages. I saw it last night and again this morning but tonight it is back to normal.

I've been admiring the sidebar and am wondering how you have achieved the random selection of thumbnails (with titles) on it. Are you using a javascript that pulls up various divs? SSI??

The reason I ask is that I would like to encorporate something similar on one of the websites I maintain.

-Elizabeth

(I hope my question made sense.)

Floydm's picture

I did it server side using the php array_rand function. You can do it in javascript though: take a look at the code for the random book covers here. That is a javascript version of the same basic concept.

Thank you, Floyd;

I'll stare at php.net and array_rand to see if I can use that. (Have also copied the random book covers script to peruse.) Did you write the script? If so, and I end up using it, I'll be sure to place a credit in the coding I use.

I just emailed the code to you. By all means, modify and use it if you can.

Thank you, Floyd! That is most kind of you.

I had hubby download Firefox for me but I have to get used to it. I am going to be interested in the comparisons since so many people seem to favor it over IE. The problem right out of the gate is that my bookmarks, or at least some of the subfolders, did not import in total. Bummer, but hopefully we'll figure that out.

Also, I have noticed that now some fonts are strangely much larger or much smaller for instance the "thread title" which also shows the last posting time is much tinier. I run fairly high resolution (I think) so my stuff is smaller than normal anyway. I don't mind it, btw, it is just noticable.

I'm very adaptable though and hope to find what the better browser thing is. I don't have any problems with IE except for crashing all the time due to some weird Adobe flash error. (lol) Like that isn't a problem. It drives me nuts.

Oh, and also, Floyd if you see this I did just award a star in Firefox and it worked but it shimmied like your sister Kate. :o)

KipperCat's picture
KipperCat

Is there any chance you're double clicking on the stars? I think the system would regard that 2nd click as a 2nd vote, and disallow it - hence the dancing stars.

zolablue's picture
zolablue

No double clicking.  With IE the stars just move all over simply by placing the cursor over them without even trying to click.  I launched Firefox and clicked on a star and it worked but it shook like crazy.  Like a screen "nudge."   That's ok.  I'm still evaluating Firefox and I'm not sure I understand the appeal.  I miss some things about IE that I can't find on Firefox and I don't think the layout of some of the functions on Firefox is as user friendly so I'm using both until I can see if one is really better in some way.

Floydm's picture
Floydm

IE is catching up with Firefox because they've stolen copied many of the cool features from Firefox like pop-up blocking, tabbed browsing, and built-in Google search in the latest version.

I design and test in Firefox, so what you see on your screen in Firefox is what I intend the site to look like. I only get on IE when I absolutely have to. I work on a Mac, so it isn't trivial for me to run IE.

The stars do have issues on IE, I hear, I just haven't had the time to look into the issue.

zolablue's picture
zolablue

Well, I know it matters a lot to each person how their software functions.  It is no small thing to me either and I always appreciate advances in technology.  I must have the latest version of IE then because I have had great pop-up blocking, tabbed browsing and built in Google searches for months now.  Maybe that is why I didn't notice such an improvement with Firefox. I like to keep an open mind though so will always try new things.

With the exception of that one font size your site looks exactly the same on my computer in both Firefox and IE.
