I just found this forum...
... and it feels like I've stumbled across heaven. So many bakers! It's fantastic!
I'm not entirely sure how I started making bread. It was something I never had much interest in, but we watch a lot of cooking shows and, well, I guess I figured that I'd give it a try. Then I tried again and again. I made a sourdough starter last April and took more attempts than I want to admit to before I produced something edible, so I guess this isn't exactly something I'm talented at, but I'm having fun. Really, I haven't made all that much bread yet, so I have an awful lot of learning to do yet.
Anyway, I'm in Australia, if that's at all relevant, and am looking forward to getting to know you all and, of course, to learn new things about bread making! :)
and some of the best as well. PiPs and Shaio-Ping come to mind. I think they are both in Brisbane
Welcome and Happy SD baking

Welcome aboard the bread train!

The best way to learn how to bake bread is to bake bread often and kind of keep track of what you are doing. Make the same recipe over and over and pay attention and ask questions.
The first thing I learned was that I had to UN-learn almost everything my mother taught me about making bead. She made awful bread (but GREAT baking powder rolls). After that, it got easier.
Sourdough is delicious and a bit of a misnomer. None of my loaves are at all sour. The key is to have an active starter. Well-fed and rises readily when fed.
Have delicious fun-bake often and come back with questions and pictures!
I'm very new to this too, but loving it. Baking is very new to me - although I love cooking and I'm not bad at it. I've definitely got the bug!

Welcome to you too Alex, from Glasgow I see, I have friends in Glasgow and really enjoyed my visit to Scotland a few years back now, looking forward to visiting again sometime before too long.
kind regards Derek
It's a lovely place. Fantastic food and good places to have a drink and hang out. :)
Welcome Freddus quite a few Australians about on TFL, Unfortunately neither Shaio-Ping nor Pip post these days but there is plenty archived by both those very good bakers. I was pleased to see you filled in your profile and we can see that you are in Victoria, i'm here in Perth experiencing a week long heatwave 42 degrees so not much baking going here at the moment. Its very nice to be able to see where people are from as it can make quite a bit of difference on advice that might be offered, and of course there are different flours available in different countries too.
kind regards Derek
