Hello from windy Shetland!
Hi there!! My name's Nicki. I'm a Canadian living in Shetland (that small rock north of Scotland in the North Sea). I'm a Mum of two young boys, an aspiring writer. For the past 6 months I've been writing my blog Roots & Wren, which is all about finding happiness through cooking wholesome, unprocessed, and whole foods, and central to it is bread!!
Baking bread is a great source of joy for me and it's lovely to find a group of like-minded people who get it!
I can't wait to chat to you all!!
Nicki
Welcome to the forum
Roger
Thank you!!! Very excited to be here!!
Nicki
... well, according to the reports it's been a wee bit blustery up there (I have relatives in Ornkey, but not quite as far as you are!)
And if you get good at bread, there's a bakery for sale up there too :-)
Cheers,
-Gordon

It has indeed been a wee bit on the windy side, but we got through it!! Nearly flat calm now (by Shetland standards).
The bakery that's up for sale would be very big boots to fill...I might need to make a couple more loaves before I'm quite ready for that ;)
Hi Nicki and welcome to the forum.
Sounds like a very worthwhile endeavor.
I went to your blog
http://rootsandwren.com/
and thought it very nice.
Took me a minute to realize I needed to click on the pics to get to the recipes, but once I did, I was very pleased. Haven't read it thru yet, but from what I have seen so far, I am looking forward to doing so.
Very nicely done. Well written, detailed and layed out. Very clear as well, which is rare.
Congratulations and again, welcome.

Hi Dobie!
Thank you so much for your kind words. It really means a lot. So far it's really just been friends and family reading the blog so I never really know if I'm on the right track with it! I'm really glad that you enjoyed it!
Can't wait to chat again soon!

Stay with that approach. Writing to family and friends is perhaps the best way to be honest, humble and thorough.
I always try to write as if somebody really cares, and who better than family and friends for that.

Thank you for several good old Scottish recipes. I spent 5 years in Aberdeen as an impecunious student and lived on bannocks, mealie and stovies. I've never made oatcakes successfully so I'll be trying your recipe soon - my dough was always too dry and crumbly. Your bannocks look delicious too.
Thanks for your kind comments! I do love the old school Scottish recipes. I'd never heard of half of them until moving here! I'm a bit of an oatcake addict now! Let me know if you try them out!!

Hi Nicki and thanks for sharing your blog address. Congratulations for your blog. I started mine years ago and then stopped posting. I started to bake again with sourdough for last six months and now I am really in it trying to achieve the results which I can find on this and other websites. So far so good!
By the way, there is a small chance that I will be visiting Shetlands in June this year. Actually I will be in Glasgow for my business and maybe I will also fly (by myself) to Shetlands. Will let you know if I will be around.
Joze
Thanks Joze!! I've just been starting out with sourdough. I love it, but have yet to figure it out. I just started a starter a few days ago, and hopefully this will be the one!!
Are you posting on your blog again? I'd love to check it out!!
Please do let me know if you make it up this way. It's a bit of a jaunt, but well worth it!!
Nicki
Nicki,
Definitely I will let you know in advance if I will be coming. I am still waiting that my presentation proposal will be selected and then I will start planning.
Regarding my posts on blog - a lot of stuff to talk about, however it is not something special that wouldn't be published yet, so I am still not sure if it is really worth to publish. Currently I am trying to find root causes for failures and success with sourdough baking and when I will be pretty sure that the conclusions are the right ones I will publish them.
Kind regards,
Joze
