UK bread & travel tips

I'll be going to the UK in mid-September  for 2 weeks and am looking for advice on bakeries, markets to visit, and lodging in London and Edinburgh. Part of the time will be based in Sittingbourne. Had hoped to stay at Fleet River Bakery, but learned that they no longer offer lodging. Does anyone know of something similar?  Looking for locations convenient to public transit.  Also would interested in meet-ups.

Thanks,

Joana in Seattle

Is phenomenal, in my opinion. Check the website for hours of operation. It gets quite busy so best to go early and not on the weekend. Several bakers bring their products to sell. Maybe plan to pick up lunch from one of the cooked food vendors and find a spot by the river to eat it.

Also, Marie-Claire reviewed three London bakeries during her recent visit there.

might be worth a look to get some ideas?

I'm originally from Edinburgh, but not been living there for too long to make any direct recommendations - I currently live in  Devon, but hope the trip goes well!

Are worth a peruse... Walthamstow market is one of the bigger ones in North / East London - if memory serves, there is a Russian / Lithuanian bakery about halfway down, as well as the famous Manze's eel & pie shop. Ridley Road market (Dalston Kingsland) is small but very vibrant - has some wonderful fruit & veg. Chapel Street market (Angel) is far more upmarket than the other two with some great foodie stalls including an award-winning Indian take away. There's also a branch of the Euphorium bakery there. On wednesdays, also at the Angel, you've got the antiques market in Camden Passage if that sort of thing floats your boat.

Then in Stoke Newington and up towards Stamford Hill, you've got a lot of Organic and Jewish food places which are kind of cool. And there are two traditional bagel bakeries up Brick Lane. IIRC there should also be a large farmer's market in Stoke Newington at the weekend...

... the Real Bread Campaign's website. Put in the postcode of where you're staying and it'll give you a list and map of the nearby bakeries recommended by RBC members
