Gourmalicious- My very own little home bakery

Hi all, I am very excited to share that I have finally started selling my baked products to a select group of customers and got extremely flattering reviews. I bake before leaving home on 1-2 workdays  and then half day over weekends with a full time job I only bake as hobby. Some of the things that really picked up and people loved them include: 1-Garlic Knots 2-Pleated bread with different fillings 3- Cheese and herb loaf. I am sharing the images here.

Nice work, Farah! Garlic Knots and cheese braids are hard to beat. So, are you baking any bread to clients soon?

Thanks Khalid, I have a huge order of Garlic Knots for Friday morning, also I am invited at a Local cooking show on TV to teach baking these. That is going to be my first TV cooking show appearance. Happy and nervous both.

If you are baking on that cooking show, see if it is possible to do a test bake before you record, just in case the oven differs from your own.

Thanks for the tip TV Action!! I will be carrying with me the pre made bread at 3 different stages, that is risen dough, while knots are proving and the finished product. in one hour show with two 7 minute commercial breaks it is difficult to demonstrate and bake a bread from scratch. So the director asked me to work this way. Too much of preparation.

Hi Farah,

Lovely breads.  I especially like your garlic knots.

I am a home baker too and started with just a few friends that I baked for several years ago and now I bake for many more.  Very rewarding so I know how you feel when your creations are well received.  Lucky recipients and lucky baker. :*)

Take Care,

Janet

Hi Janet, great to know that you are home baker too, it is such a rewarding activity when people send thank you notes and appreciate products. If possible can you please share how you package the products, so far I have been wrapping them in plain brown paper bags, look so dowdy, I am planning on designing and getting some real good packets or boxes and tags to package and send off the orders. If you have some can you please share. Thanks once again Farah

Hi Farah,

A picture is worth a thousand words:

I use clear plastic bread bags that I purchase from the woman who sells me my grains then I make tags myself out of parchment paper and a craft punch.  All tied up with wrappia ribbon that I buy on line and cut to length.  Boxes are nice but expensive so I do not use them.

I started baking as a hobby and got hooked a few years ago.  I baked for my family only but then, when I began baking with sourdough, I began to bake daily and the family couldn't keep up with my 'experiments' so I ventured forth for 'samplers' of the excess.  I did not charge for my breads and the breads I baked changed daily based on what I was working on that time.  Soon my 'samplers' became regulars and, rather than charging for the breads because I did want to be 'in business' , people began to give me gift cards to use when I grocery shop.

I think your business is different from mine in that you are charging right off the bat and you seem to be putting out a more predictable group of breads than I am.  You are also a more advanced baker than I was when I started out which will change how you do your presentations.

Best of Luck,

Janet

Thanks Janet, these are good ideas. I will use your idea for making the tags, love them. I am not very old in baking either, but have been baking rigorously experimenting plus the market here does have not great breads to offer so people really loved my products and insisted on paying so they can be confidently ordering. I love that you are being returned the favour by gift cards how exciting. Artisanal breads are a niche market for me, I have a full time well paid job but baking is equally a passion from childhood which i am realising now. I bake twice a week and let people know what I am baking and they place order, or bake what is in demand either way.

Wishing you success in all your bread making experiments.

Hi Farah, Nice post on what you are doing and the success that you are achieving, and a great response from Janet too, its great when we can all help each other. I did look up your profile by clicking your avatar but there is no information there, I always find it interesting to have a look and see my fellow TFLers profiles and their  whereabouts in this wide wonderfull breadworld, that is if they have completed that part!. Perhaps you will be able to give us the link to to view your television performance when it has been completed, i find that overcoming nerves about public speaking or being in front of the camera is a matter of telling myself that these people are here because they want to hear or see what i have to show them and that then makes it a lot easier. good luck and mind regards Derek
