Strange smell from new bannetons
Just received a couple of new bannetons today from a reputable source and they smell a bit chemically - like petrol. and I don't have to be right up close to detect the smell. I'm concerned they're going to taint the bread so am considering returning them.
I've bought other bannetons before and they've smelt pleasantly straw-like.... nothing like these new ones.
Anyone else had this?
I would check with where you purchased them to see about a replacement of your order. Ask where they are getting their supply. If it's China I would re consider and maybe ask for a refund.
I agree that if they were made in China.....send them back and find a new source.

Just put them in a hot oven for a few minutes. The wicker, reed or bamboo from which they are made is very porous and easily pick up odors, especially if they were shipped in a shipping container.
No, I have never had that problem and I have quite a few brotforms.
I purchased mine from Brotform.com and from Fantes.com. All smelled 'pleasantly straw like' as you described above.
If you purchased them from a new source, like others recommended above, call and see what they have to say. I would be very hesitant to use them without knowing their source and how they were handled.
Good Luck,
Janet
