Ordering from USA, shipping to Canada
Seems I may have to buy my DMP from an American company, since I can't find a Canadian source.
Both KAF and Barry's Farm have it in 1 lb bags - KAF for $6/lb, BF for $2.29. Shipping for KAF is higher, too.
Anyone have any experience with these companies shipping to Canada? BF take sPaypal, which I prefer, but other than the prices, what's the difference?
Thanks.
And border fees. I found that out the hard way when I ordered flour from Bob's Red Mill. It cost a blind fortune and then wasn't worth the cost.
differ greatly depending on shipping method. Canada Post is usually the most reasonable ($5-10) while UPS/FedEx can be outrageous ($30-50+). Brokerage costs may not be stated/included in shipping cost so make sure you ask.
I owned the local UPS Store here for 11 years and never use UPS for cross-border shipments because of their brokerage fees.
BF uses USPS, I see.
Are either better as suppliers? Are their products equivalent?
Not sure what DMP is ...but if it's Diastatic malt powder (according to google) I bought mine at a nearby health food store (Natures Emporium) ..have you called any of that type of store? Or a beer/wine making store?
Yes, it's malt powder. None of the health food stores in my area carry it. The wine & beer makers only have malt syrup in cans (I believe it's nondiastatic, too). The Bulk barn only has nondiastatic syrup.
Is Nature's Emporium in Southern Ontario? if so, I might see one in my travels.
I finally ordered some from Barry Farms in the USA. Cheap product, but huge shipping cost.
Yes, southern Ontario.
It's in Newmarket, Ontario (about an hour north of Toronto) on Yonge Street if you're familiar with the area, http://www.naturesemporium.com/.
I wonder if you might find it in Whole Foods Market.. http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/ it's a similar store.
I bought mine quite a while ago and don't know if they still carry it..I must look next time I'm in there :)
Thanks, I often pass though Newmarket on the way to and from Toronto (sometimes stop at the Costco there).
Yonge and where? I can make a trip next time to see what they have - always looking for foods, spices and hot sauces.
Is it diastatic powder?
It is behind the Mandarine Chinese restaurant on Yonge on the east side, just south of Mulock.
The liquid malt IS nondiastatic. I went through a lot to find a source in the States too. I think I did order it from Barry's Farm because the only stuff I found in Columbus Ohio was liquid (good for bagels, no good for what you want).
You know, you actually can make it if you are really driven. I was almost going to do it before I found Barry's. There is a post on this site about it

I purchased diastatic malt powder from an Ottawa, Ontario brewing supply house, Defalco's. I'm attaching a screenshot of the label from the bag. While "diastatic" wasn't printed on the label and the staff in store didn't know whether is was diastatic or non-diastatic, I contacted the head office and was told that it was diastatic. Defalco's also sells online so I thought I'd add the link here in case anyone else is looking for diastatic malt powder and would like to find an Ontario supplier.

Click the tab for Online Store and then search for Amber Dried Malt Extract.
A website sent Karo Corn Syrup for a lab analysis of its sugars. Here is the result:
Karo Corn Syrup
~12% Maltose
~13% Dextrose/Glucose
0% Fructose
0% Sucrose
0% Lactose

Made another trip to the Bulk Barn today, as well as as the local Fresco grocery store. BB has jars of Eden malt syrup for about $8. The label says its diastatic. They also have two organic flours, one labelled a "bread" flour.
I get all of my flours from Bulk Barn. I go through a lot of the unbleached bread so I find a trip to their supplier is worth it to me to buy in 10Kg bags...Grain Process Enterprises in Scarborough.
I have some small amounts of flour from them for experimental breads - spelt, kamut, Red Fife... but am not sure of the source, the quality and the age of the flour in their bins, so I haven't bought a lot.
I don't see any prices on the pdf ?
I do shop there and know the price of White Flour Hard Unbleached 20KG is $23.40. I'm not sure how or when the prices change..I suspect they're based on market.
