Hello Everyone From The Kansas City Area
Hello All,
I have been on the site for a little over a week now but have not posted an introduction yet. There is so much to discover here that I've been too busy exploring the various facets to The Fresh Loaf. Just keeping up with the new Blog posts is enough let alone trying to explore the Forums. I love the exchange of ideas and formulas on here. After working in the Bakery Industry for over 20 years, I got away from it about 15 years ago and now just bake for fun and because there aren't any good bakeries in the KC area. It's been fun the last couple of weeks working with a sour culture I first started for pizza crust.
Tonights baking was a Sponge Dark Sour Rye. If interested, check out my latest Blog Post.

It's not that I'm a habitual smartass, but have you been lost in the burbs of Paola for the last fifteen years? You really need to get out more often because there are good bakeries in the KC area and Lawrence, KS.
First, there's Farm to Market bakery that supplies both retail outlets such as Price Chopper and restaurants in the KC area. They've been around for quite a while.
Then there's Fevere, located at about 17th and Summit in KC, MO. They have limited hours for non commercial customers but they have established themselves as true bread craftsmen. Google them for more information.
My favorite is Wheatfields in Lawrence, KS, recognized as one of the top ten bakeries in the US. It's quite a business operation that includes a dining room that's always busy.
Now that that's done, welcome to the site. There are a lot of local home bakers here on TFL from the KC, Lawrence, and Columbia, Mo area. Given my inconsistent efforts and results, I look forward to learning from your posts.
Hey there! I'm from the KC area as well.
I was a home baker of bread for many years and then got away from it because I got busy in other areas of my life. But I'm so sick and tired of not being able to find any good bread in our area that I decided to take up baking again.
We used to have a nice bakery quite close to us but I think it went out of business because of the big 'no carb' fad. What a shame.
Anyway, I've very new to this forum as well so I haven't posted anything but a brief introduction. However I'm learning quite a bit on this forum. I'm glad I found it.
Actually you have helped me make my point. How big is the KC area and how many full line bakeries are there? KC has no shortage of donut shops with Ridgewood Donuts on Blue Ridge Blvd as one of the best, but tell me where I can find a descent danish roll and coffeecake, puff pastry anything, pies, cookies, donuts, breads and cakes all together and from scratch in 1 full line bakery. Before I got out of the industry, I had worked in several bakeries and donut shops in this area and hadn't found anything like that. My first job in a bakery was in a small town of 7-8000 and the bakery had everything and the majority was from scratch. Lawrence is a little far to include in KC but I am going to have to make the trip to check Wheatfields (and Wheat State Brewery) out. I would love to find a bakery in the area with scratch made danish so let me know if you know one. One of our traditions for Christmas is danish coffeecakes and Stollen for breakfast Christmas morning. I have been making them at home since we moved into the area.
P.S. Yes I am in the burbs, but on the MO side NE of KC. If I'm guessing right on the LV, KS then I'm do east of you.
