Where is there a cooking blog like "The Fresh Loaf"

Hi All,

This is a great blog if you are into bread and I am.   I am also into cooking and just spent 1/2 hour looking for a blog where there are similar discussions on cooking and food preparations.    Do any of you have a suggestion ??

Have you done a search for "cooking forum"?

Sure,   that was the first thing I tried.   I am disappointed.  The forums I hit were lacking in either  quantity of participants or quality of experience.

I tried Savour since I subscribe to the magazine.   Nothing !!  It is all output and no input.

I am trying La Cucina Italiana now but it appears there is no real discussion of cooking.  They seem to ask each other how to best spend money while traveling in Italy and they swap a few recipes.

I am used to the "The Fresh Loaf" forum and resultingly  a bit spoiled.    So by asking the question in this forum I hoped to get a qualified answer.

You're not likely to find many forums with the volume of on-topic posts you find here. My quick survey of Google returns found cooking forums tend to be somewhat thematic; the forum mentioned by Anna appears at first blush to be worth lurking about for a while. You're unlikely to find any forum that meets your exact requirements, but a month or so of reading posts in a number of forums will most certainly reveal one or three that you can learn to love.

cheers,

gary

That looks interesting.

They have an error in their soybean article, though, and I told them so.  They are claiming that soybeans are the only legume that fixes nitrogen.  *raised eyebrow*

And this is why cooks shouldn't pretend to be farmers!

Though, as a cook, I admit it's nice to grow some of my own food, I would never pretend to be an expert!

eGullet is a great and a not-so-great forum. It has lots of really knowledgable people, but its an insular forum populated by old-timers that aren't really welcoming to outsiders or newbies.

It's very strictly moderated, unlike Floyd's lighter hand here at TFL, and is intolerant of humor, off-topic discussion, etc.

I rather feel like I have to "walk on egg shells" when posting there, but if it's expertise you're looking for, eGullet will have it.

I do find chowhound to be useful from time to time, but the setup is different and there isn't the same community.

Ultimately, when it comes to cooking, I tend to rely on three sources:

tastespotting.com

allrecipes.com (ignore the comments, too many folks say any given recipe is terrible after changing everything in the recipe!)

and foodnetwork.com (specifically alton brown)

I've often wished TFL had a non-bread subforum, because the statement that TFL is unique is absolutely true..

I can't even find a close second.  However, a very active cooking forum is Food.com (formerly Recipezaar) if I can't find a recipe there, I don't need it.....they have over 400,000 member submitted recipes and a very large community of great cooks.

I think for people who end up baking bread, it is a natural extension of other cooking skills. That said, TFL is still valid for just about anything related to cooking topics. For anything not directly related to bread, there is an Off-Topic forum. There is so much talent here at TFL, and such a diverse knowledge base, I can't imagine a question you could have that you wouldn't get either a direct answer or a good reference to an external site from the members here!

On that note, can anyone help me with a headliner replacement on a Dodge Caravan? ; D hehe

Anxious to see what happens.
