If the clay is pre-heated, you might want to lay some toothpicks on the bottom to slow heat transfer to a cold glass dish and reduce the chance of heat stress on the spots that directly touch the hot clay.
Just remember to throw the grains out after baking. (compost) I tried using some baked grains (pie shell weight kept in a jar for that reason) and they never softened up after hours of soaking and cooking. The joke was on me when I figured it out! :)

Thanks, mine has an uneven bottom (a romertopf chicken pot) so would corn meal or rice or something work as well?

the Römertopf? Why not just line it with parchment paper if you are worried about chicken taste transfer.
