Italian Street Food, Zeppole first made in Naples
Zeppole were first made in Naples by a baker who sold from a street stand.Today they can be found in bakeries and in stalls. They are usually eaten with sweet wine or dunked in warm honey.

My mother was second generation Sicilian - I think it was Zeppole that she remembered from her own childhood - and now, this has triggered my own treasured memories. For some reason, I don't remember having them on holidays, although other types of Italian cookies became our tradition; some were made by my mom (I'd help, especially the eating part ;-), and what she didn't make, she'd send my dad into the North End (I'm from the Boston area, too) to buy.
But I do remember her pointing them out in the windows of the many Italian bakeries that used to exist in the North End. I'd go with her sometimes for her weekly trip in town to Haymarket for her veggies & fruits - yes, you brought back so many great memories!
I like your blog, btw. I read further, about Bologna. Are you there right now? I envy anyone who can spend an extended length of time overseas, learning a language, soaking in a culture - please - write more!

Hi Lynne,
I actually come from the Boston area also. My grandmother made these on Christmas, but don't remember any other holidays. I have been living in Switzerland for 20 years, thought I'd only be here for 5 years. I do most of my grocery shopping in Como. I spend quite a lot of time in Italy and just love it. Most of my recipes are from my family who have been in the restaurant business West of Boston since they 1912. I also get recipes from chefs in Italy, who very often are more then willing to give them to me and even many times the ingredients to make them. But having said that, Boston is one of the greatest cities in the world. My entire family live around Boston and Cape Cod where I will be spending some time this coming year. Thanks for reading my blog.
