What is a parent to do?
As a parent of a 9 year old, I am attempting to teach him how to be self sufficient. This is my gift to him. He has been growing his own vegetable garden for two years now. Often giving extra vegetables to people camping in our campground. All soups are made from scratch at home. Tomorrow he will be learning how to make cheddar brocolli :) Meanwhile he and I are learning to bake our favorite breads at home. Last week he sat with me, watching videos about shaping baguettes and decided he was ready to try. I'm proud of my little guy. He is perfecting his stretch and fold and seems to be getting the shaping of baguettes down better than Mom. The short baguettes in this picture he made today to bring to a friends house. How cool is that!

I have to say, from what I just read, you sound like an excellent parent! Keep up the good work and you'll have one hell of son who will be every bit as great as you.
Nice loaves by the way ; )
Great job. So, did he learn to clean up his own mess too ;)
Very cool! I'm impressed.

I can't wait until mine are old enough to really bake with me. Rinoa likes to help, but with her being two the flour wars before clean-up are more her style. :)
... and my mother tell me off when I bake in her kitchen! You are a great parent.

You are providing your son with an experience that will endure forever and that will no doubt make him a better parent himself.
Neither of my sons were that interested in cooking when they were children, but, as adults, are great cooks and do almost all the cooking in their families. Both also have been more successful than I was in getting their own children involved in cooking.
The kitchen is a great place for children to start feeling grown up and to develop their sense of competence in doing serious "work."
Congratulations!

Thanks all. I really feel like I am the lucky one. What memories I will have of my little boy growing up :) Plus I just am a little bit envious because he is learning things early that I had to wait until I was an adult to learn.
Enjoy baking all! We are :)
Your son looks so pleased with his work- and well he should be- those baguettes look terrific!

He's going to be quite the ladies man with the skills he's getting now! ;)
Did I find your campground?

What wonderful things to do with kids. Mine loves to cook but only occasionally. Being able to bake is a skill that will serve him a lifetime. Tell your little guy that he's doing great! Al
