Awesome bakery in Cheyenne - and they grind their own whole wheat
Not long ago I posted a topic in this forum asking for recommendations of bakeries to visit in Cheyenne and Denver, and the verdict on Cheyenne looked kind of bleak. Well! This morning I spent about five hours at The Bread Basket Bakery and Sandwich Shoppe, which is a bakery that my sister frequents in downtown Cheyenne. A couple of days ago the two of us went in to pick up some of their homemade granola and ended up talking them into letting us observe one of their typical mornings. It wouldn't have been a big deal for you professional bakers out there but for an amateur like me, it was a serious educational experience... Plus a lot of fun thanks to owners Duane and Tana Geerdes.
My dad and nephew on the right.
Hot cross bun dough for Easter.
Duane's cinnamon roll dough.
Rolling it up with filling.
Ready to go into the pan.
Grinding wheat berries for whole wheat flour.
Yes, I probably should've had my hair back but they let me take home everything that I baked!
Very happily taking my somewhat lopsided cinnamon rolls to the oven!
Dough for marble rye loaves to be rolled up later.
English muffin loaves rising after being rolled in corn meal on the left.
Beats the heck out of my Kitchen Aid - too bad the bowl would never fit in my sink!
Tomorrow I hit Denver.....

Wow, what a great find and wonderful pictures! Floyd should put that on his map. --Pamela
I think I will try that as well one day, maybe summer holidays. btw Geerdes sounds like german name to me, allthough I have seen it in Holland as well.
Cheers,
Jw.
Pamela and Jw - It was really nice to finally have a reason to force myself to figure out how to post pictures! My sis took the best ones.

I always love to visit different bakeries. I've posted a couple visits with pics..it's nice to see what's going on in the world of bread. I loved the picture of the cinnamon rolls before rolling. I never would have imagined that the log would be so long!

Nice Glom! Surreal discovery and then work as the hired help; nice redefinition of the vacation ideal. Congrats on a great find and thanks for the report and pictures!

Great story and photos.
Thanks Summer,

I only got two days in Denver and had a lot of relatives to visit but I was able to get to the Trompeau Bakery at 1729 E Evans Ave for some delicious French pastries. It is around the corner from my aunt's house and she told me that it is awfully hard not to go there every morning! I recommend the kalamata and eggplant quiche - very unique.
Betty, Wild-Yeast, Jeff - It pays to get a little pushy. Most people are happy to indulge someone who is interested in what they do. As a piano and guitar teacher, I'm all too ready to give adivice/help to anyone who has a song he/she wishes to learn.

And that Summer, will only make the world a better place.
