This week's baking

Number 2 son and his family are visiting. This is the first face-to-face family contact we have had in a year and a half. It's so nice. It's also an excuse to bake. Here's a sampling of what I've offered ...

Jewish sour rye and Berliner Landbrot

San Joaquin Sourdough Baguettes and Epis

Sourdough Pizzas (This is one of four)

Multi-grain Sourdough's (AP, and home-milled Whole Wheat, Rye and Spelt)

I didn't get a photo of the peach crumble my son and dil made while I was working on the pizza. It was pretty yummy with vanilla frozen yoghurt.

You should know that we don't have any sons who didn't grow into amazing cooks and bakers.

Hope everyone had a patriotic and delicious and safe and sane 4th of July!

David, great work. Family visits are precious and a great opportunity to spoil them with your tremendous bread.  The pizza with the mushrooms, red onion and fresh basil looks delicious. Have a great time.

Wonderful varied baking and cooking David.  I'm not surprised that the apples didn't fall far from the tree.  With such as great baker as a parent it would be surprising for your progeny not to also strive for culinary excellence.

David, that is an impressive collection of bakes. Must have taken a couple of days to prepare it all, but I guess it was a labour of love and stomach!

The way you did the side ear with double leaf on one of the multigrain sourdoughs really caught my eye and I've done a drawing of it in my book of bread ideas.

I'm one of three sons, so we all imbibed my mothers love of baking, but we all have our own baking specialities that we took to.

This reminds me of an old commercial which we used to have in South Africa. There were two elderly women and the interviewer asked them what they did to pass the time in the old days, and it showed them cooking and cooking preparing many meals. The interviewer then asks, so what did you do for fun? "We baked", they said!
