Just a suggestion, Floyd. Would it be possible to be able to simply drag and drop photos from the computer desktop when posting? Like Facebook and other sites. I've never managed the 'little tree/URL' thingy (being old and illiterate).

it is just about impossible to download pics anymore from my iphoto using the " tree". The process is so cumbersome with trying to pick the right picture and then follow the process to get it to appear and then it is too big most times...would be so wonderful to have a much more simplified process. Hope it can be done. Thank you !  c

gives me huge headache every time I try to upload/post pictures, so I gave up years ago.  Now I post pictures by copying pictures directly from Blogger to here.

Thumbs up to that. I've had to expand the disk on this server a few times since many people are uploading directly from phones at quite high resolution now. It is much nicer when the images are served from Blogger or Flickr or somewhere else.

Did you consider compressing or rescaling the images on upload. I manage a site that takes in a photo every 2 seconds and have to deal with considerable number of files and run every photo through a compressor before storage - generally rescaling images to a size of say 640px in width preserves enough quality and reduces from several MBs to about 50k - all done in about 15 lines of code - I know this is just extra time and a pain, should you be using c# if be happy to send you an algorithm (doubt we are using the same language though - you are probably pho or something)

I'm running PHP, 7.0 now. Yes I've tried compressing/optimizing images in the past but found it was too lossy. It has been quite a while though, so I probably should take a look and give it another go.

They all have some type of library for this stuff and in our case we need to preserve quality to an extent so that meter readings and small text can be seen. Initially I tried just lowering quality and that didnt do much for file soze and discovered its best to conver to bmp in memory then re cast as jpg with new dimensions and maybe lowers quality a tad and this had the most positive results on optimizing space - if I just took files as is I would have many TBs of data, some users have their devices set to upload 20mb files sometimes shokting up 500+ files in one click and I need to keep the total space under 15mb so that goes to show that scaling the dimensions is a good strategy. These days you can even manipulate in .js before the upload its nuts !

I don't think there is a reliable solution to provide that w/ the version of the software I am running here. I'll look around a bit though.

I used to use photobucket but they got outrageously expensive so I refuse to use them any longer. How does one use blogger ?  I used to enjoy posting so much but have almost stopped the past couple years due to the photo problem. I will certainly try something new and easier....I am ALL about easy !  Thank you for any help.c

flickr is my preferred tool... They give a lot of space for images free and even do nice code snippets for sharing in other places (including here) ?

I joined Flickr but can't get anything done. I tried following their directions to choose " download" and then there would appear a " choose size"....but that never happens. I have tried and tried clicking on the pick and choosing download but it ends there. Any step by step inst for how to get a pick from there to here would be MOST welcome !! Thank you .c

I don't even download for sharing - I just use their built in sharing tools! Flickr is to me the simplest - there are options like photobucket as well that I'm less familiar with, and also the blogger one I havent tried, but for me Flickr has been fairly stable over the years

Here's an example walkthrough of how to share a picture from there:

Once you have a picture up there that you want to share, click it and look for a little sideways arrow that is their share button (which is different from the "download" button, because that will just give you options to put the picture back on your computer in different sizes which isn't what you want)

It looks like this:

Then once you click it you'll have some options - the first time you do it it usually looks like this with a number of ways to share, and you're going to want to go and select the BBC code if you want to paste something in the forums here, since I've found that to be the easiest option.

So, you click BBCode (Which I think means BulletinBoardCode), and you'll see something like this:

You want to pick a reasonable sharing size (like I usually pick something with 500 as the biggest size number because I'm not expecting anyone to want print quality images on a forum) and then once I have the size picked I copy the code snippet they put there (Cntrl+C or right-click+select "Copy" or however you usually copy - I wish they had buttons but they don't unfortunately)

Then once you've got the code copied to your clipboard, you can come to your forum post and just paste it directly into the box with your text. It will just show up as text until you click preview or Save - then the picture will show up, like this:

(If you know anything about coding you can take out the stuff about "url" in there to remove the extra links to your file or the little line of credits that flickr adds there, but that's an extra step that you don't really need to do in order to be able to easily share your images without having to be too technical.  I'm not going to explain that stuff here since it's a little more confusing for folks that don't want to get into nerdy coding stuff. ?

when the share arrow is chosen I don't get the choices above that you get. No BBcode comes up !!!  ( I will take the baked goods you show though !!) So I don't know what is the matter with my " share" choice but it is definitely not the same screen that you show.

You have to be logged in to see the sharing options - if you try to share someone else's photos very few options and none of the tabs will show up. The other possibility is if you set the privacy levels on your images so they aren't publicly viewable, Flickr wont let you share them too.

You can check that by looking here:

If it was set to something not public, you can change that at the time you upload - there should be a panel when you click the little upload that looks something like this near the bottom on the left side of your screen:

It should be "visible to everyone" otherwise flickr will obey your instructions and prevent anyone including you from trying to make it shared on a public forum ?

Well I am logged in and I do have it set to public. There is a blog post that pertains to the " grab thing and BBcode" which I didn't understand and has to do with streamlining the ability to share . I can't post a question for some reason on their blog posts...says my membership doesn't allow. The BBcode just doesn't show under share. Thank you for trying to troubleshoot !!!   c

Didn't realize Flickr has so many options when I used it 9 years ago...

is a free service provided by Google and you need to have a gmail account to sign up.  Once you create a blog on blogger, you can upload pictures to each post you create. I use Blogger to store pictures I want to share and I'm not aware of any space limit there. I simply copy my pictures from my blog post there and paste them here.  Very easy to use.

New camera arrives today.  My old camera is so old that I decided to get a new one.  One that isn't as fancy either.  I kept hitting the wrong buttons and messing it up, so hopefully I can figure out the new one.  Daughter is getting married in Feb, maybe, and need something decent to take pictures with.

Anyhow, suggestions on how to do the photos here, photos will be on a sd card, and I can put them on my computer, but do I send them directly here or have to have a membership to some site that lets you download photos and send them to here or other places.

If I want to resize a picture. Open Iphoto and drag picture to desktop. Then open 'Open Office'. It's a free office program that works like Windows. Choose Draw and then drag the picture in. Click on the picture and open "Position and Size. Make sure 'Keep ratio' is on. Then type in the new width or hight to make the picture smaller. Then click on 'File' select 'export. Change the format to JEPG and rename the photo again. Save to desk top. Then, yes there's more, because this file is only recognized by a mac for some unknown reason I have to click on the new desktop file to open Preview. Once in preview I open file, select export. Rename the picture again. Save to desktop. Now I have a net useable smaller in size picture.

EDIT. I Just learned something new. yes I can resize i picture in Preview. Live and learn.

yesterday from my ipad. must say it was much better with the new upgrade. photos now appear where you want them too.  don’t know about resizing although I think the site does some of that automatically? I use the square photo format when taking the photo on the ipad and that seems to help the file size. I don’t know much about IT/web stuff, just try to use it.

Thanks Floyd, upgrade is great.

I still can't load photos from my Mac desktop. The little tree is gone and there is a 'photo' icon. I've tried drag and drop, I've tried inserting the jpeg number. Please help this computer illiterate fossil.

Are you using some kind of popup/ad blocker? If yes, then you will need to set up the blocker to allow popups from this website.
