Great deal from WorldwideChocolate

[Floyd, I don't know if this is an acceptable type of post. If not, please delete it. I'm not affiliated with the company.]

WorldwideChocolate is having a great sale this weekend. (20% off on $100 order). With the crazy market prices on good chocolate these days, I thought I'd share the discount with everyone.

  • They have other sales too (15%, etc. if you don't want to buy $100).

I just bought 6.6 lbs of Valrhona (and a favorite chocolate bar from Michel Cluizel) for $99 (including shipping!). Enough chocolate to last me all week. (I jest! I meant two weeks.) It would normally be $120.

They are small maker of chocolate from bean to consumer, we were in Springfield about 5 years ago and visited the shop.  I think the nibs is what you are after.  Nothing they sell is inexpensive, the packaging is well done and I think their chocolate is an acquired taste.  Buying a good chocolate liquor is a more cost effective way to get a more useable product.

(Kidding of course)

The last thing I need is to be encouraged to spend $100 on chocolate! What're you trying to do to me, Thom?

I stocked up on some Newman's Own 70% at the grocery a few weeks ago. They were buy one get one free, and I think i took about 3 lbs home. That makes it a little easier to resist.

In case I do cave in and order more (there goes my pink Utah salt money!) do you have any recomendations on something that is made to break into neat little sticks for my chocolate croissants? The valrhona blocks look like the pieces are very large in the pictures.

Not sure I'd use such expensive chocolate in croissant, but I have seen those pain au chocolate "bars" somewhere.

I thought it was http://www.scharffenberger.com/, but I don't see any (maybe discontinued).

I'll search around later today and post back if I find some.

I know they exist.

I saw that deal on Newman's Own (or was it Green & Black) a couple days ago too at Safeway. I almost dropped $100 right there. Had never seen either of those priced so low.

I've been using the 70% because they're good to eat so i figured good to wrap in dough, right? I like to buy fair trade, organic too, and being on sale was nice.

http://www.worldwidechocolate.com/shop_valrhona_209.html How about these for croissants? Look like the ticket, eh?

I was just about to post the link.

Looks like the site category for those is "chocolate sticks", which the French call "batons".

Here the page with all of them, all good chocolates: http://www.worldwidechocolate.com/shop_sticks.html

I'd use Callebaut for Pain au chocolat. Not as expensive as Valrhona.

Found this when I was perusing the site this morning.

At first I thought they were mini-baguette with chocolate inside, but it looks like they're all chocolate.

I once had a tissue box that looked similar.

Is that a photo of the bicycle or backpack carry baskets in France?

Glad to get back to the bread theme.

They even come in a "bike basket".

I'm guessing the chocolates look like a baguette because they're wrapped in printed, aluminum wrappers.

(Gah! Sold out! I guess I'll have to go with those Jack Daniels whiskey chocolates). Chocolate and burbon works! ;)

...of chocolate is A LOT OF CHOCOLATE.

(I suppose I could have visualized 5 lbs of flour to get an approximation, but 6.6 lbs is so much more chocolate than I thought I was buying).

For the average U.S. resident that is a supply that will last just over 6 months, if there are more of you it will last even shorter period.

It's the average US resident part that concerns me.

6 months? Give me 6 weeks! :)

I hereby retract my recommendation to purchase chocolate from Worldwide Chocolate.

I just reviewed chocolate prices from other vendors and realized that I didn't do approproate due diligence on the "sales" from Worldwide Chocolate.

I find them guilty of artifically inflating their prices and then offering a "sale" on those inflated prices.

Here's my email to them:

I bought 6.6 pounds of (Valrhona French Chocolate "Les Feves" Grand Cru Guanaja 70% Cocoa) for $99.78 from you, thinking the 20% was too good to pass up. Imagine my surprise when I found that other vendors price the same product at $79.50, exactly 20% less than your price. This wasn't a sale at all. It's the classic "inflate the price and then offer a sale on that inflated price". I'm very disappointed in your pricing trickery and, although I am pleased with the product, will not be doing business with you again.

I hereby retract my recommendation to purchase chocolate from Worldwide Chocolate.

(Floyd, if you can delete the entire post, please do. I should have done my due diligence before jumping for what I thought was a valid sale.)

It isn't that big a deal, just strike one up for experience and a lesson learned. Would not let that spoil my enjoyment of the product.

It's still exceptional chocolate, just not as good as deal as I thought.

I'm more annoyed at myself for not doing some comparison shopping, which I almost always do.

From what I'm hearing about the state of the cocoa plantations the world over (not good), we should get all the chocolate we can while we still can. ;)
