tech support?

Hi,

I have been traveling for the past 2 1/2 weeks for work and I can't wait to get back to my kitchen! Whenever I could spare a moment I have jumped on and you all have made me jealous with your baking!

I want to post a a couple of photos of my very first sourdough that I baked just before I left but I am having trouble getting the images up.

Can someone direct me to any info on the site that explains how to do it?

thx

Tigressbakes,

There are probably other better instructions somewhere on the site. What I've done that works for me is explained below:

First, before you go crazy trying to make this work where it will not work, I have heard there is a problem with uploading images using the standard "safari" browser on Mac OS-X if you happen to have that type of computer. In that case, you can download and install a different browser like firefox or camino to your mac, and then go from there. Yes, that's a pain, but you more or less are stuck with getting that done if you want to upload images to thefreshloaf.com from Mac OS-X, unless something has changed recently. It can be a little tricky, but it's really not too bad to add a different browser to your Mac.

Assuming you have the right browser program, if you have the photos on your PC, then you can click the camera icon above the window where you enter your comments. This will bring you to a window meant for picture insertion, but you can only insert photos that have already been uploaded. So, you have to click the "upload" link at the top of that window, which will allow you to fill in a form and browse to the location of your photo to select it. If you then click on "submit" at the bottom of the window (you may have to scroll down to find the "submit" button), it will upload the photo to thefreshloaf.com (be patient, it may take a few seconds or more to upload). At that point, you will be taken back to the first window, and this time you can click on "insert". The photo should appear in the comment composition window. You can then use your arrow keys or scrolling and mouse clicks to place the text cursor before or after the image to add more text to the comment. The image may appear quite large, but you can move the text cursor before or after it by using your arrow keys, scroll bar, or clicking with your mouse. Finally, you click on "Post Comment" as usual.

Once a photo has been uploaded, it will appear in the first window that comes up when you click on the camera icon and is available to be inserted just by selecting it by clicking on it. If you haven't uploaded a photo  before, you have to click on "upload" as above.

Have a good night. Better to do new messy image upload stuff on a good night's sleep. My computer says 2am, as I live in NJ, but I'm in AZ at the moment. It's "really?" only 11pm here, but it feels like 2am after some very good Mexican food and mariachi music.

I finally did it. One question - do the images have to come up in an image link before i can actually use them in a thread or blog entry?  it seems that is the only way i can get it to work, but i don't remember that happening to everyone that posts photos.

HA!  By chance I was also trying to post this picture last night with no success.  I was able to import to The Fresh Loaf but still unable to insert the pic into a posting.  By following bwraith's explanation I was able to confirm that I'm beyond help!  I was able to insert this pic by using a copy and paste when the image comes up after clicking the camera icon.  Good for you, tigress.

Based on the error messages I received when trying to upload a picture directly to this site (rather than storing them on Photobucket), there is a size limit of 640 x 640. Since most digital cameras today have much higher default sizes, the pictures would have to be edited down to that size prior to uploading. I haven't been able to edit one and test this theory yet though.

Eric,

I've uploaded photos larger than 640x640 after getting that message. The photo is just automatically resized during the upload process, which I think the message suggests will be the case. For what it's worth, I've uploaded and inserted a number of typical images from my camera without any trouble in IE6 on windows XP.

It was a bmp file. Uploading gifs or jpegs are the way to go.

I hadn't tried the new camera icon yet so I did a test just now. Personally I think it's a little easier to use photobucket and the insert image icon on the right and paste the URL into the box. Once the image is uploaded, highlight it and grab a corner box handler and drag it in to re-size it.

Good luck!

I was turned off Photobucket by reading their Terms of Service and also the Privacy Policy (which was not so very private). I like Floyd's privacy policy better. Thanks, Floyd.

\me looks around...

"Privacy Policy? We don't need no steekin' Privacy Policy!!!"

I am flattered that many of you prefer posting your images here, but a couple things worth noting are that:

1) Posting them here uses my disk space and bandwidth. Right now that isn't a problem, but should disk space or bandwidth costs get prohibitive, I could have to clamp down on how much I let people upload (or whether I let them upload at all).

2) While the images are at Photobucket, you retain more control over whether they are up or down than you do here. You also can link to them from any other forum or blog you participate in easily.

Perhaps Photobucket's TOU are scary, but my guess is that is just the lawyers speaking. Everyone I know who uses Photobucket has been very happy with the service they provide and the cost they provide it at. But if what I am providing is working for you, I'm fine w/ that too.

Is there any way for me to delete the pictures from Image Assist? No use for mine to just sit around taking up bandwidth. Or would that delete them from the threads also? Please forgive my ignorance in these matters... Hope I'm making myself clear.

I have posted many images to this and many other forums and the simplest way (and I am a total computer dummy) is to use sites like photobucket.  If you have a fast connection it takes a minute or so to upload a few images the storage and membership is free and all you have to do is cut and paste the URL of your image and it always comes up.  When I first came on this site I tried the other way and it all seemed to complicated for me (and it didn't work) I'm sure it is simple but for me the simples way is photobucket or imageshack etc.....

=== I have posted many images to this and many other forums and the simplest way (and I am a total computer dummy) is to use sites like photobucket. ===

The reason I don't like to use Photobucket is that I have no idea what their business model is or how they expect to stay in business giving people multi-gigabytes of online storage for free. I would hate to wake up some day and find that Photobucket is gone and half the content on The Fresh Loaf is pictureless. If I upload to Floyd's site I know that as long as the site exists the content will survive.

Well to each his own I guess.  The way I see it, in a forum things are so fluid in a few days any post will be moved to the bottom of the page never to be seen again so any provider that lasts the life of the thread my pics are in is good enough for me.
