Testing the new site

The new server is up. I have a copy of TFL running there. If anyone wants to give it a whirl, go to tfl.thefreshloaf.com and give it a try.

You are welcome to create content there. It will get blown away when I import the content for real and transfer TFL over to the new machine. Probably... tomorrow evening?

Try the new image upload too. Click the tree, the click the little file system thing next to the URL. It should let you upload.

If you are going to upload test images, please keep track of whether you are on the new or old server. The new server has serifed fonts everywhere, which should make it easy to keep track of which machine you are on.

Let me know if you run into any issues.

Oh yeah... BTW, I haven't looked at it on Windows yet. If it is totally hosed, uh... well, I'll fix it soon.

Serif titling font

For printed material I vastly prefer serif to sans serif fonts, but I am not sure that the serif font you chose for the titles is working - the previous sans serif is more readable.

Suppose I should add: Firefox 2.0.0.18 on Windows XP SP2, 1280 x 800 LCD.

Thanks. I'll take a look at

Thanks. I'll take a look at it on Windows tomorrow.

I'm using Georgia though, a Microsoft typeface designed specifically for the web. But I'll put the titles back into Arial or Helvetica if they don't look good in the titles (or not bold them). I'm just getting really sick of Verdana bold.

and to think.....

you also are a bread baker.  Oh Floyd, I am so impressed!

Preliminary findings

Hi, Floyd.

Some photos don't seem to display. There is some HTML code displaying in some entries that does not display in the same entry on the "old" TFL.

New Site

Personally, I prefer the sans serif for easier reading.

So far, everything, including pictures look fine.  I have not gone very far down in the site, however.

I am using IE6 at work and will try on my Firefox 3 on XP at home.

Serifs

Serifs improve readability. That is what they are there for, to emphasize the letterforms.

When the net first started everyone moved to sans serif, but most people still had blurry CRT monitors then that fuzzed the serifs too much. Now most people use LCDs that are much much crisper and can display serifs well.

Look at the sites people really read like the NYTimes.com and the Washington Post. Many of them use seriffed fonts now.

Is it true that I can enter

Is it true that I can enter raw IMG or A HREF tags without disabling TinyMCE (the editor)?

Hmm... Not quite. I have to hit the HTML button first, then paste the raw HTML in there. Still, in the end it works.

"my recent posts"

Has the "my recent posts" list vanished with the upgrade? Please bring it back!

Maybe it's me but...

Floyd,

This may be a dumb question...but with the new system, how do I upload photos and/or post linkage to Flikr, Photobucket, etc.? The camera and tree icons are missing on my blog entry and "Post new comment" screens...am I missing something or are those funtions operational yet?

Thanks,

Howard

Website question...(to Floyd)

Will the website name still be the exact same or will it move?  I'm getting nervous that I won't be able to find the website shortly.
