When baking is a comedy of errors...

So. I wanted to bake the potato bread that FloydM made today because I was hungry for something savory. And, really, who can deny the fact that bacon in anything is a very good thing? So everything was going well. The dough was doughy and very sticky, but still manageable. I had it in a bowl because I have no couche yet, nor do I have a brotform basket. It had been formed and was ready for the transition into my cast iron dutch oven that had been preheating in the oven. Little did I know that I was about to flirt with disaster. Let me just tell you that a bowl that is not oiled enough will let go of your dough in a not-so-cute way, depositing it more on the side of your pan than in the middle. Also, greasing the pan with something would've been smart, but anything smart seems to be too hard for me today. So...now I'm playing a game of 'we'll see' with this bread. I just hope it tastes good. EDIT PS. The Best/Worst Baking I've Done

You have my sympathy.  If it were my house, we'd be fighting over who gets to scrape the last bits off the side of the pan.  Thanks for sharing a bit of reality.

You've been my inspiration for trying sourdough and baguettes, which I plan to do later in the week.  My starter is just getting started as my first one died, but I think I know what I did wrong so I'm off with a new one today.  Maybe I'll do some yeast baguettes tomorrow. :)

What a lovely thing to read!  Thanks, and good luck, may the bread faries be with you.

Surprisingly, this bread tastes WAY better than it looks.  The crumb was moist and softer than store-bought sandwich bread.  Almost airy.  Not dense at all, which was what I thought it would be when I first saw it.  The bacon fat that I added made the flavor so good, and the cheddar cheese I subbed for chives since I didn't have any added another bit of tang that complemented all the flavors.  The sour cream taste came through as well. It tasted just like eating my twice baked potatoes.

Lesson learned here.  Bread doesn't have to look perfect to taste good. :)
