What size pan for 2 batards?

Hi,

This is likely a dumb question, but I'm looking to buy a baking steel. Would a 14"x16" pan be wide enough to cook 2 batards at the same time? The bannetons are 6" wide, but obviously you have to space them out...plus i'm sure it expands? I don't want them sticking together.

Thank you.

That's about the size of the baking stone I use and it works well. What I do is to turn the loaves about half way thru the bake (give them about 20 minutes before turning). Turn them so that the two sides that were facing each other are now facing outward.

Dave, thanks for responding. Do you turn them that just to get an even bake? Or is their another reason?

Have they ever touched and stuck together during a bake?

Yes it's to ensure an even bake. I've never had them touching or sticking. Mine usually end up rising more upward so there's about a 2" space between. I would think that if they were touching from the original oven spring you could separate them when turning and they would bake just fine.

Hey) I had it some time ago. I think it's enough for two batards baked at the same time. Just think you don't have what to worry about. It's going to be enough for you.
