Anyone tried smoking grains ---- indoors?

I want to try smoking grains and either milling them or adding them as a porridge. The caveat: I live in an apartment and don't have ready access to outdoor space for smoking.

Can cold smoking be done indoors without stinking up the place?

  1. Yes. Keep the lid tight though.  Let it go cold before taking off.

Hey KW,

I picked up a Breville smoking gun last summer on sale and I first tried smoking flour and then grains but I couldn't discern much smoke flavour in my finished loaves. Now what I do is after my baked bread has fully cooled I put it in a large ziploc bag and fill it with smoke. Once the smoke has dissipated in the bag I take it out and leave it cut side down on a wood cutting board. The smoke flavour really shines with this method.

Oh, yes, some smoke does go in my condo (but I ;like it-smells like I'm out camping in the woods!). I just do it on my stove and turn on the overhead exhaust fan to blow out most of the escaping smoke. Works pretty well.

Let us know how your smoking adventure unfolds.

Great - thanks for the comments. I'm going to see if I can get a little experiment up and running within the next week or so.
