Hello, neighbors!

I took up bread making about 15 years ago, but gave it up after a brief period due to health reasons.

Something, and I cannot remember now what it was, put the desire to start making bread again. So, I bought a new jar of yeast, a few bread pans, and got to baking.

So far, I have re-discovered the truth that you CAN'T rush the bread, no matter HOW much someone is urging you to be on time.

I have also discovered that my family LOVES my bread, and it's an easy way to get a lot of attaboys.

Today, I've baked my fourth set of loaves. My first was plain bread; then I tried cheese bread (that's the one I was rushed to complete); then yeast banana bread; and back to plain bread, with 1 cup of buttermilk in place of 1 cup of water.

I am 64 years old; a redneck biker from Macon, GA; an Army veteran; retired public school educator; father to 10, grandfather to 12. I live in splendiferous harmony with my gift-from-God, happily-ever-after trophy wife Vanessa, the elegant, foxy, praying black grandmother of Woodstock, GA. We have one adult daughter living with us temporarily, as well as two middle school age grandchildren we are raising. And we have a Bad Ol' Puddytat, my fat black Manx cat SugarBelly. This is us at the wedding of my son Mickey to his bride, Anna, about 16 months ago.

The Monday Bread

This is the bread I baked yesterday. The heel of one of the half-sized loaves and the round loaf is all that remain, because everybody in the family loves it. And, we have new neighbors, so I sent the kids with one loaf, wrapped in foil, as a welcome to the neighborhood.

I used the recipe on the back of the Gold Medal Bread Flour bag, except I substituted 1 cup of buttermilk for 1 of the cups of water. I also use lard in the place of shortening to grease the pans. The bread tastes GREAT!

Even the simplest bread is better home made.
